Message from the Principal
Hello Parents, Staff, and Students,
On Friday night, February 3rd, our students came out for our Valentine’s Dance. Our Parents’ Club and Renaissance Committee worked conjointly to make this a great night. Students were able to socialize with friends, dance to a DJ’s music, and enjoy food and beverages together. Please check out our pictures. Many were candid shots, showing our students having a lot of fun truly enjoying time together. We will have at least one more Spring Dance, so if you did not make this one, please try to come to the next one.
This week, Monday through Thursday, we welcomed our parents into school for Parent Teacher Conferences. These occurred with two afternoon and two evening conference dates. It was a great opportunity for our parents to hear about their child(ren), ask questions, and inquire about upcoming learning and events. Parents were able to meet their child’s new special area teacher given the recent change to a new subject.
On Tuesday, 2/7, The Battle of the Pages culminated. An incentive to encourage students was that the top readers could “Silly String the Principal”. Three students achieved high numbers of pages by reading various books, receiving certificates and reading necklaces. In addition, they were able to spray Ms. Giardina with silly string.
Our high reading achievers are:
Jayden Elias
Ela Comlekciogullari and
Cailyn Schoonmaker
Congratulations to these exceptional readers! Check out the video!
On Friday, February 10, 2023 Lt. Johnson and representatives from the Civil Air Patrol were here to speak to our 6th graders. They discussed the importance of character, discipline as well as the benefits of participating in the Civil Air Patrol . Our students enjoyed this presentation during convocation time. Thank you to Lt. Johnson and the Civil Air Patrol.
Please enjoy the pictures, check out ehtalder Instagram, and have a great weekend!

Robotics: First LEGO League Competition

This past Saturday Mr. MacNeill and a couple of our Alder students competed in the First LEGO League Competition at Salem Community College. We may not have qualified for the next round, but the students exceeded expectations. They all worked together and each student had a part when it came to the judging portion of the competition. The students on this year's team embodied the Core Values set by LEGO: Discovery, Innovation, Impact, Inclusion, Teamwork, and of course Fun. In the end, it was a great experience for everyone involved and hopefully a memory that the students will have their entire lives. Plus, it looks good on any applications for schools when you say you were part of First LEGO League!

Teacher Feature
Mrs. Burdhimo - 6th Grade Math
What is your position at Alder? What brought you here? How long have you been here?
I teach 6th grade math for Cobalt 1. What brought me here? It was so long ago, I can’t even remember! LOL, ok, for real, as I finished up my student teaching (way back when), I spent a lot of time subbing here when it was a grade 4-6 intermediate school. I was asked to handle a long-term sub position for 5th grade and I never left! I have worked in this building for 23 years
What is or has been one of your favorite things about Alder?
All of my work pals, for sure. In 23 years, I have seen A LOT of people come and go, but many of my original crew are still here. We have watched each other’s kids grow up and seen our former students become our colleagues! I really love the energy that the young teachers bring to the building. We all learn from each other. Sometimes I feel like I’ve worked here forever. It’s all kind of surreal spending so much time in the same building. It will be so strange when I retire in a few years, to not see the friends that I’ve seen day in and day out for so many years!
What do you think will be your greatest challenge this year?
Since we are exactly halfway through the year, I can say that the biggest challenge has been adapting to post-pandemic teaching. There are so many new challenges because so many things in people’s lives changed through the pandemic – and since that time in the pandemic was a relatively large portion of a child’s lifetime, those changes have affected them the most. There are so many differences in how our students see the world, especially with their near-constant access to technology. We all (all of my Alder colleagues) are working so hard to meet the needs of our students and to help manage their academics, behavior, work-ethic and overall well-being – all the while, trying to manage our own work-life balance to keep our sanity!
Where did you go to school? What degree did you earn?
I attended several colleges: Virginia Tech, Rutgers, Stockton, and a few community colleges along the way. I graduated with an Economics degree from Rutgers and a teaching degree from Stockton. I am considering pursuing a Master’s Degree in Equity and Diversity.
Any fun facts you would like to share about yourself?
I love to travel and can’t wait to visit new places when I have more free time! I would love to visit all of the states (I’m more than halfway there) as well as places around the world. I also love Disney World! When I’m not working, I love to be outside – hiking, going to the beach, biking - and I love hanging out with my husband, my dogs, and my adult children, when they are around.
