Cool Beans Café is officially open!
Students from our MD program will serve fresh coffee to Alder staff every Friday! This prevocational experience is greatly beneficial for our students, and the opportunity to deliver and greet staff provides social opportunities that mean the most!
What is your position at Alder? What brought you here? How long have you been here?
I teach 6th grade math for Cobalt 1. What brought me here? It was so long ago, I can’t even remember! LOL, ok, for real, as I finished up my student teaching (way back when), I spent a lot of time subbing here when it was a grade 4-6 intermediate school. I was asked to handle a long-term sub position for 5th grade and I never left! I have worked in this building for 23 years
What is or has been one of your favorite things about Alder?
All of my work pals, for sure. In 23 years, I have seen A LOT of people come and go, but many of my original crew are still here. We have watched each other’s kids grow up and seen our former students become our colleagues! I really love the energy that the young teachers bring to the building. We all learn from each other. Sometimes I feel like I’ve worked here forever. It’s all kind of surreal spending so much time in the same building. It will be so strange when I retire in a few years, to not see the friends that I’ve seen day in and day out for so many years!
What do you think will be your greatest challenge this year?
Since we are exactly halfway through the year, I can say that the biggest challenge has been adapting to post-pandemic teaching. There are so many new challenges because so many things in people’s lives changed through the pandemic – and since that time in the pandemic was a relatively large portion of a child’s lifetime, those changes have affected them the most. There are so many differences in how our students see the world, especially with their near-constant access to technology. We all (all of my Alder colleagues) are working so hard to meet the needs of our students and to help manage their academics, behavior, work-ethic and overall well-being – all the while, trying to manage our own work-life balance to keep our sanity!
Where did you go to school? What degree did you earn?
I attended several colleges: Virginia Tech, Rutgers, Stockton, and a few community colleges along the way. I graduated with an Economics degree from Rutgers and a teaching degree from Stockton. I am considering pursuing a Master’s Degree in Equity and Diversity.
Any fun facts you would like to share about yourself?
I love to travel and can’t wait to visit new places when I have more free time! I would love to visit all of the states (I’m more than halfway there) as well as places around the world. I also love Disney World! When I’m not working, I love to be outside – hiking, going to the beach, biking - and I love hanging out with my husband, my dogs, and my adult children, when they are around.
Hi everyone my name is Kimberle Watt and I am the School Health Specialist here at Alder Avenue. The School Health Specialist supports local school districts in developing, organizing and executing health and wellness initiatives within the framework of the Whole School, Whole Community, Whole Child Model. We are dedicated to providing comprehensive social service programs in a safe, stress free and decompressing environment while providing the necessary support to staff, students and parents. I’m excited to meet everyone and work with our students, staff, and families with one goal in mind: building a healthier school environment and community.
Throughout the school year, I'll be hosting various events, contests, and programming for our parents and families. I hope to see you all get involved!
