Board of Education meeting recap by Kevin Freeman, Superintendent of Schools
Board of Education Meeting - Regular Session 2/16/2016
Superintendent’s Notes
- The entire agenda can be viewed at the eBoards link on the district web page at the bottom. Each of the reports, etc… can be viewed from the agenda.
- The meeting was called to order and the pledge recited. After moving personnel to closed session and bids to new business, the consent agenda was adopted. There was no staff and patron input on agenda items. The MSBA board report was played for the board and audience.
President's Comments
- Howard and Linda Miedler donated $20.00 to the Betty Baker Scholarship Fund.
- Thanks for school board recognition notes and gifts from each board member.
- Thanks to the taxpayers as the district received its tax check from the county.
- Congratulations to wrestling team as well as all the student successes happening around the district.
- There is a possibility of funding via school nurses coalition for funding for a systems thinking simulation for board and administrators. More to come.
- Dr. Rice thanked the district for the plant on behalf of his sister.
The consent agenda was approved which included minutes from last month, bills, setting building usage fees, HCC tuition and meal prices for next year. Some items were declared surplus. Remember, all surplus items are listed on the district eBay site.
- Bills that need separate authorization where approved.
- Building reports were presented and questions about Aimsweb data answered.
- MS wins the attendance war this month, topping 96%
- January enrollment was 2,240 students
- Salary and Welfare Committee presented to the board
- A brief update of legislation that could impact the budget was presented. The district will be meeting with the health insurance consortium also in the next two weeks to find out what kind of a health insurance increase we may receive. Remember we’ve not had an increase in the past two years.
- Under New Business, the Treasurer’s Report was approved. The district received payment from the county for 2015 taxes and the ending fund balances for January were just over 41%. This is the time of year of our highest fund balances as we only receive the county payment once a year.
- Also, under new business a bid for new wireless access points for the district as accepted, pending the acquisition of eRate funding. eRate is a federal program with a goal of funding connectivity in schools. If eRate is received, it would pay for 80% of the cost of the new access points.
In closed session, the personnel listing was approved as presented and administrators were hired for the coming year.

Congratulations to the HCC CyberPatriot team
The competition, founded by the Air Force Association, puts teams of students in the position of newly hired IT professionals tasked with managing the network of a small company. In the rounds of competition, teams are given a set of virtual images that represent operating systems and are tasked with finding cybersecurity vulnerabilities within the images and hardening the system while maintaining critical services. They also take networking quizzes from Cisco Academy and complete packet tracer labs.

Transfers and hiring process
Teachers -- it is nearly hiring season again. We have received one announced retirement and history tells me we'll have a couple more. There is no longer a March 1st deadline to request a transfer to another building. Instead, all openings will be handled on a case-by-case basis.
If an opening becomes available in your own building that you are interested in, you just need to talk to your principal about the process. If an opening becomes available in a different building, then you need to fill out an internal application in TalentEd so that principal and Central Office know you have an interest.
There are no guarantees on transfer requests. Every situation is different and we will try to do what is best for kids in the long run.
Bethany Collins
Administrative Assistant to the Superintendent and Board of Education Secretary.
Considering Retirement?
In order to be paid for your sick leave (maximum 100 days); anyone wishing to retire must have their notice into the Superintendent's Office by one of the following days, per Board Policies GCPC and GDPC:
Certified Staff: March 1, 2016
Support Staff: March 21, 2016 (for those retiring on the last day of school).
Those retiring on any other day then the last day of school will need to give 60 days notice in order to receive payment for sick leave.
Please take a quick moment for a communications survey
Peachjar eflyer system is up and running
Emails to parents are going out. Weblinks are available on each school's webpage. Or on this central page that can be found on the "Parents and Students" section of the website.
If you have any questions about this process, feel free to call x2425 and talk to Jo Ann.
