Art with Ms. Steffensen and Ms. Miller
Students have been busy learning about how colors relate to each other and ways we can mix colors to create new ones. We’ve been working on cut paper collages, drawing from observation and even engaging in a little environmental activism. Did you know that plastic pollution in our oceans is a huge problem affecting all species of wildlife? Fourth graders are creating watercolor paintings to help draw attention to this issue. Check out
Counseling with Ms. Lundy
Congrats to our August Leadership Trait winner, Liza Tittle! This month, our Leadership Trait is Growth Mindset, which is understanding that learning takes time and staying positive about your learning. You can show growth mindset by saying “yet” for skills you have not learned. Please be sure to talk to your child about Growth Mindset at home, and help them complete their Tic-Tac-Toe Board to be placed in a drawing to be rewarded with a special treat!

Physical Education with Mr. Abel and Mr. Sylvester
Hello CCES families,
For the past couple of weeks we have been discussing the fundamentals of throwing and catching and how they are used in many games and activities.
Our catching cues are to:
Watch the ball all the way into your hands.
Get into athletic (ready) position.
Hands out to receive the ball.
The overhand throw involves:
Side to target.
Step with your opposite foot.
Arm up in “L” shape.
Rotate at the waist.
Release and follow through.
We also played some fun games called “Touchdown”, “The Great Escape” & “Battle Ship”. Kindergarten and 1st graders also worked on the underhand toss and played a fun game called “Ducks on the Pond”. Next month we will introduce Soccer skills of dribbling, passing & shooting.
Music with Mr. DeStefano and Ms. Williams
We have been focusing on Beat, Rhythm and Meter during Fulton County Schools Unit One. Some examples of how students are learning these skills are:
Kindergarten has been marching to a steady beat and clapping the rhythm pattern of their names. We will also begin basic rhythm reading using traditional notation and picture notation.
First Grade has been marching to a steady beat and using stories to reinforce rhythm reading skills. Books like Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day and Tiki Tiki Tembo are great examples of children's literature that use natural rhythmic speech patterns.
Second Grade has been used a "getting to know you" rhyme as a rhythm exercise by decoding or "translating" the rhythm from words to music notes. They have also connected animals to rhythm patterns.
In Third Grade, we have used the bulletin board in the hallway as inspiration to create rhythm patterns based on jam flavors. We are also learning new and more complex rhythms.
Fourth Grade has reinforced their understanding of ostinatos (repeated musical patterns) through the Dum Dum Song and has completed group projects based on their names and the rhythm elements of a song.
Fifth Grade has been doing a lot of body percussion and drumming lately! Using odd-number body percussion patterns created by performer Keith Terry as inspiration, each student created a pattern based on his or her birthday. We also created drumming patterns based on rivers of Georgia to go along with the Canoe Song.
Chorus and Orff Ensemble are both off to a great start! We will be focusing on building our ensemble sound for the next couple of weeks before starting music for our concert on December 5th.
