Principal's Weekly Update
RAISE Goal: to make the right choice, both in the classroom and the playground
Te reo phrase of the week: kei te whakarongo koe? (Are you listening)
Kia ora,
Doesn’t a bit of sunshine give people a real lift! Our students have made the most of it by starting their cross country training this week. Our school cross country will be held on Friday 9th September so that gives them a bit over a month to set some goals and build their level of personal fitness. It is an expectation that all of our students will participate in cross country training and the school event. If your child cannot participate, please send a note to school (or by way of Seesaw) to let us know that they can’t take part.
I’d like to pass on a big thanks to all of our wonderful whanau for making sure that your child is wearing the correct school uniform. As always if you need any new uniform items, please see Emma at the school office.
iPads
If your child uses a BYOD iPad at school, they should’ve received a new padded iPad cover this week. These were kindly donated by the Winter family.
Matapu History Fact
The original one-room schoolhouse (measuring 22ft 6in x 20ft inside with a 12ft stud and 8ft gables) was built by Mr McCabe and cost 129 pounds. His tender was accepted on the 29th May 1888 and the school was completed in just over six months. There were complaints about the size of the school all through the 1890s when the school roll rose to around 70 and finally in 1899 a new room was added on to the school.
As of today we currently have 0 Covid cases within our student population and 1 staff case.
Kia pai to wiki (have a wonderful weekend).

Enrolment Notice (out of zone)
Enrolment at Matapu School is governed by an enrolment scheme, details of which are available from our school office.
The board has determined that we have two out of zone places available at year 7 and two at year 5 for Term 3. The deadline for out-of-zone applications is 3 pm 11th August.
If the number of out of zone applications exceeds the number of places available, students will be selected by ballot. If a ballot for out-of-zone places is required, it will be held on Friday 12th August. Parents will be informed of the outcome of the ballot within three school days of the ballot being held.

Hawera Touch Module
Hawera Touch Module at Turuturu Soccer Grounds will begin Week 8 of Term 3 (Thursday 15th September) every Thursday after school. We are organising teams from Years 0-8 and need you to fill in the attached Google Form by following the link below. The cost to register and play is $15 per child.
Click here to sign your child up for Touch. You will need to fill out individual forms for each child. Please fill in the form before Friday 26th of August.
Rear a Bull
We are fundraising with our Rear a Bull scheme again this year.
We are asking for a calf, (preferably Fresian bull, Jersey bull, or beef calf) to be reared to at least 100kg with the intention of being picked up and sold around the first week in November or later if it is not ready.
Those Donating Calves will have their name on a board and displayed on the fence as REAR A BULL - Calf Sponsors of the School and will go in the draw for a substantial mystery prize to be drawn on Matapu School Pet day.
If you are able to help with this scheme, please contact the School office,
Brent Espin, 0275513660
or
Nathan Joyce, 0275144630
and we will get a calf ID tag to you.
With Thanks,
Matapu School BOT and SPA Committee
Room 1
It has been an exciting week in Room One this week. Our Maker Projects are underway and starting to look really great. The kids are developing their research skills and solving problems as they go.
The heat packs are not only functional, but looking great. Some of the students have chosen to make a small one to heat up in the morning to keep their hands warm in their hoodie pocket.
The friendship bracelets are being made and passed out almost daily, the joy of giving and receiving a gift is being felt by many.
We also have some winter seeds planted in their own bottle greenhouses that will hopefully burst through the seed raising mix in the coming weeks. Wish us luck, and maybe a little sunshine!
We will keep you updated next week with more projects.
Room 2
Now that we have had a couple of beautiful days - we have LOVED getting outside and using our awesome new shed! Yesterday we were building our special Matariki kites so the children needed to create the kite frame from bamboo. New skills of sawing were learnt!
Maths has been focussing on mm/cc/km etc conversion, decimal place value as well as practicing 3 by 1 multiplication and fractional knowledge. For writing, we have been working on sentence structure so compound sentences have been the focus in our class. Everyone in Room 2 are happy, content and settled into school. We have a beautiful classroom culture of care and support - it is great to be part of Matapu School!
Room 3
Room 4
Room 5
Room 6
We have had a busy and exciting week in Room 6!
On Monday we started our afternoon groups for Aumangea Taima and science. Room 6 kids have been sampling sound, wind, and floating/sinking experiments and challenges with the rest of the Junior Team. It is neat to have our Room 4 students take on roles as leaders of groups, learning how to share the tasks so everyone gets a go.
On Wednesday we got to see Zappo the Clown with our pre-school friends. It was another hour of pure laughter and fun and we are so grateful to be asked to share this event each year.
Thursday was Mrs Heatherton again to learn about coding and programming the Spheros- no easy feat as they seem to have a mind of their own! We are really enjoying learning alongside her and the group of senior leaders she chooses each week.
