Success in Sixth Grade
Volume 8. Issue 3
Month Number Two!
"When it is obvious that the goals cannot be reached, don't adjust the goals, adjust the action steps." - Confucius
A Note From Mr. Nakano
Together, we will build a set of goals for your child to initially meet for the year. As they accomplish them, we may set new goals for the remainder of the year. I look forward to sharing your successes, and letting you see the pride in their work, with you next week!
BYOD
We are excited to begin the Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) initiative on Wednesday, September 30th. If your child has turned in a permission slip already, they may start bringing their device this Wednesday, September 30th. If you have chosen not to send in a device with your child, there will be devices provided so that every student can participate in our lessons. On Tuesday, September 29th we have one of the technology teachers from the District coming to talk with the students about Digital Citizenship. We will continue our discussion about Digital Citizenship throughout the school year.
If your child is bringing a device to school, please label all materials with your child’s name and homeroom teacher. This includes any accessories such as cases, mice, headphones, and/or keyboards. Also, please make sure you remind them to have it fully charged when they bring it to school. We will not be charging devices in class. Additionally, remind them to keep their device on them at all times before and after school. We will have students store the devices in their desk during the school day, and we lock our doors anytime we are not in the classroom.
We recommend that when students arrive to school, they keep their devices in their backpacks and their backpacks with them until we open our classroom doors. Once they remove their devices from backpacks, they can hang backpacks on the bag hooks outside.
We thank you for your support in this. We are working hard to continue to develop your child’s 21st century skills. Please let us know if you have any questions.
Outdoor Ed
Mark your calendars - Outdoor Ed will be the week before the Martin Luther King, Jr. 3-day weekend, from January 12-15. More information will come through informational videos like our Back to School night presentation, but we wanted to make sure you had the dates.
To help offset the cost of Outdoor Ed, we will be, with the help of a parent volunteer, hosting an Outdoor Ed fundraiser. All funds, up to the amount of Outdoor Ed, raised by your child will go towards the cost of their Outdoor Ed experience.
We will have a kickoff event on Monday, October 5th to get things going. Once we mention "Outdoor Ed," we're sure they'll be ready with lots of questions already!

Social Science
What has amazed our students is that the hunter-gatherer life is still a part of some cultures, even in the 21st century.

Math
Activities 2 and 3: Prime Factorization, Exponents, GCF, and LCM
We are wrapping up our second mini-unit involving prime factorization, exponents, GCF, and LCM. Students are reminded to use either the "tree" or "steps" method when determining the prime factors of two or more numbers.
Tomorrow, we will do another quick mini-assessment as we aim our learning targets closer to the bullseye.
Our next activities will involve fractions and mixed numbers, something they performed well on the basic skills pre-assessment. As a result, we may accelerate the pacing of the activities to allow for more group work and projects.
