Principally Speaking

Parents, Guardians, and Community,

This week has been a busy one, as we started Acuity testing for all students in the areas of math, reading, and language. There was a change in the content of the Acuity test during the 14-15 school year from a test that gradually introduced grade level skills over the course of three tests (Test 1, Test 2, Test 3) to the current test format in which the three tests measure student mastery on end of year grade level proficiency standards in a Form A, Form B, and Form C. So, essentially, students should perform more poorly on Form A, as many students will not have had any instruction on the material. The bottom line is that student scores on Form A will be lower than we would like. As the year progresses and more instruction on grade level standards takes place, the expectation is that students will perform significantly better on Form B and better than Form B on Form C. Please help us by discussing Acuity testing with your child and by asking him or her to give a best effort. The results truly will drive our instructional focus.

On a more enjoyable note, we celebrated College Go Week this week along with adding in some homecoming dress-up days. See the schedule below. Students and staff alike did a great job of participating in the spirit days associated with College Go Week. I did my best to create some Clemson University fans (Clemson Tigers), as that is my undergraduate Alma mater. I won over several girls just because they liked orange. :) I considered myself successful.

Monday- Dress for Success Day: Dress up! (dresses/suits, ties, etc...)
Tuesday- Career Day-Dress like your future career a nurse/vet/etc...
Wednesday- College Wear Day-wear your favorite college colors or spirit wear
Thursday- Hat Day-"Put Your Thinking Caps On & Prepare for the Future!"
Friday- Warrior Pride/Way Day-wear Danville school colors

On Wednesday, 9/30, we will be conducting vision screenings with the help of the Lions Club International. Indiana code requires middle schools to screen students in grades 5, 8, and any new students to the school. Please have your students wear their glasses or contacts on Wednesday if they wear them. Should the screening test of a student indicate a possible vision problem, students will be screened a second time by our school nurse. If necessary, the nurse will contact parents with recommendations.

As always, I am so honored and privileged to serve the students, staff, and families of the community of Danville. Thank you for the opportunity.
