Daily Tidbits...

Guess What?!?!?!?!?! I'm very excited to announcing that Kids A-Z (formerly know as RAZ-Kids is up and running. Your child is bringing home their login information and how to access the website. Kids A-Z is a leveled reading resource for kiddos that have great stories that are designed for your child's reading level. In class, I encourage the kiddos to listen to a story, then read it a couple of times before they take a quiz. Also, when accessing Kids A-Z, please have your child get books from their "book room" rather than "reading assignment". I will often assign books for kids to read during small reading group time. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me!

Pictures...I will try and include pictures with our Newsflash, whenever possible. Below, I've added 3 really cute pics of some of our friends with their 3rd grade reading buddy. Please be patient, I only have three picture spots and 21 sweet 1st graders!!!!

What's Been Going On This Week...

  • Reading--This week, we have been busy analyzing characters and how their emotions can change throughout a story. One thing I have noticed is the kiddos will either describe a character as happy, mad or sad. I'm trying to encourage them to go deeper with their descriptions and notice if they are frustrated, angry, excited, scared... As you read with your, child ask them how the character is feeling and how do they know (what clues in the text/pictures tell them that).

  • Phonics/Sight WordsWe have completed the final-consonant cluster unit for phonics. These are words that begin with nt, nd, ng, nk,. As you are reading with your child, encourage them to look for words that have blends that we have been studying.

Next week, our focus is on the final -s family blends. hand, ring, tent, trunk. Some words you could practice with your child are: band, blend, mint, print, sunk, hang,. One hint is to really focus on stretching the words out...like a piece of bubble gum...so the kiddos hear all sounds and record the sounds in order. That is much more helpful for kids to analyze word sounds and parts rather than memorizing them.

Sight words: Fort Osage uses the Fry Sight Word Lists. First grade is expected to master the first 100 words by the END of 1st grade. The link will take you to a website that has printable lists for sight words.

  • Math--This week, we shifted our focus to place value and exploring patterns on a 100's number grid. Next week, we will continue place value but also add comparing numbers (greater than, less than, equal to).

  • Writer's Workshop--This week, we have been writing about things we can do by ourselves and adding illustrations to our stories that match our words. We will continue this next week and the dive into stories about what we want to be when we grown up.

  • Leader in Me--This week, our habit focus was habit 5...Seek first to understand, then be understood. My focus was to help the kiddos understand the importance of full-body listening. I have included a great video of Cookie Monster learning how to be a better listener. I've included the link below. This is one of my favorite habits because later this year we will spend a huge amount of time on kindness and doing random acts of kindness (my favorite).
