12/19/2018 Winter Break Edition

Winter Break- December 20 - January 2

Winter Break starts Thursday, December 20 for Manassas City Public Schools. Students will report to school on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. Then, from December 20th to January 2nd students will be off from school. Students and teachers return on Thursday, January 3rd.

During this long break it is my hope that students take this time to spend with family and friends. Also, be sure to take some time to sit and read a book for 20 minutes a day.

Celebrating Student Success

A goal that we have at Mayfield is to celebrate our students who are making Mayfield proud by showing their Bobcat Best on a regular basis. On Tuesday, December 18, we celebrated 74 students who have been selected as students of the month in October and November. We invited the students and their family and friends to attend a celebration breakfast. We played music, had Dunkin Donuts and juice, and simply had time to share some of the wonderful stories that make our students successful. Thank you to Ms. Broskey for organizing this wonderful event. We look forward to our next celebration in March!

MCPS Libraries Bookfair at Barnes and Noble!

Last Saturday Manassas City Public School's hosted a Bookfair at the Barnes and Noble on Liberia. There were several guest readers. The list of readers included Mrs. Wagner, Mrs. Goldzung, Chairman Williams, Mrs. Radford, School Board Member Seaburg, and myself to name a few. I want to be sure to thank Mrs. Kirkland for her efforts to organize this bookfair to help benefit all of the children of Manassas! Well done!

On a side note, MCPS has collected over 700 books during the 1st month of the Manassas Reads book collection. These books will be donated to people within our community!

6th Grade Orchestra and Band Concert

We concluded our winter concert series on Monday, December 17 with another wonderful performance. The 6th grade band and the 6th grade beginning orchestra and advanced orchestra's put on an amazing show. I'm always impressed with how much our students grow during the course of the year as they learn to play their instruments! Great job leading our music program to Mr. Tressler, Mr. Souza, and Mrs. Sweeney! Mayfield is proud of our music program and it was on full display during the month of December.

Winter Break Countdown Fun!

This past week we had some winter spirit fun at Mayfield. On Monday we had Holiday Hat Day.

On Tuesday was Crazy Sweater Day and on Wednesday was Pajama Day.

During Crazy Sweater Day the students voted on the staff member who had the ugliest sweater. Although I though my sports jacket was pretty ugly, it did not come close to beating Mr. Hinton and his ugly sweater. He was followed closely by Mr. DeEmilio and Mrs. Hyde and then by Mrs. Fisher and Mrs. Heffron.

Instructional Focus: Number Talks

A group of teachers at Mayfield Intermediate participated in a Number Talks math activity. This was a follow-up activity to a professional development training that our teachers participated in during our November professional development day. The goal of number talks is to build excitement and advocate for ACTION within the math class!

Congrats to Mrs. Perrow, Ms. Broskey, and Mrs. Fisher for participating and winning prizes. These three teachers will be provided $150.00 worth of classroom supplies that they can use with their students!
