Principal's Message
September 20, 2019
Hello Willink Families,
This week, Willink and Webster Schools began celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month which will run from 9/15-10/15. Teachers from all over the district have been sharing ideas, resources, and other materials to help our students celebrate Hispanic Heritage. One of our building goals is to provide curiosity-driven learning by creating experiences that ignite wonder and a critical exploration of diverse voices. While we do not want to limit the celebration of Hispanic Heritage to one month, it’s a great opportunity to highlight Hispanic and Latinx contributions to our culture and community.
As we look forward to next week, I’m excited to announce we will soon be offering additional support during the day for all students by introducing the Language Lab. Much like the Willink math lab, students will be able to access homework, classwork, or skills help during study hall from one of our World Languages teachers.
Also coming up on Monday and Tuesday are school pictures! Please see the link below to all-star imaging and an image of the letter we sent in August to determine your child’s picture time (The number in parenthesis refers to their class section).
As a reminder, the building does not open to students before 8:15am. If you are dropping off a student after 8:15am, please use the front doors off of Publisher’s Parkway. Students may wait inside from 8:15-8:35am. If you need to enter the building after 4pm, please use the back doors which we normally keep unlocked until 8pm. The offices will be closed after 4pm and the front and house office doors will be locked.
And finally, you should receive a call from me around 5pm tonight and I hope to see many Willink families at the “Back to School Bash” tonight which runs from 6-9pm on the Willink football field (scroll down for more information). To ensure the success and safety of the event, I’m sharing the text of my phone call below.
Good evening Willink Families this is Brian Powers, Principal at Willink Middle School calling with a few reminders for tonight’s Back to School Bash. For safety reasons, we are asking that any Willink students who leave the Willink event do so with an adult. There are events at the Ice Arena and at the Thomas Stadium and we do not want students crossing the street or parking lot at night, especially with the absence of crosswalks. The event runs from 6-9pm but we will need to close admission after 8pm. Also please note that there is no reentry to the event. We hope to see many of our families tonight and are looking forward to a great evening, Thanks in advance for helping us ensure it is both a fun and safe event for everyone. Have a great night.
Thanks again for your efforts in helping our students adjust to a new school year and new start time. Looking forward to a fun evening!
Take care,
Brian Powers

RIT | WE@RIT
Please accept our invitation and pass along the word to attend our fifth annual WE@RIT Engineering Open House, being held this year on Saturday, November 2, 2019, from 9am – 1pm at RIT’s Kate Gleason College of Engineering in James Gleason Hall.
What is the WE@RIT Engineering Open House? It’s a FREE by-women-for-girls event, best described as a “buffet of engineering activities to explore,” intended for girls in grades 5-9, their families, and their educators. Led entirely by female engineering students from the Kate Gleason College of Engineering, visiting girls explore all kinds of engineering, engineering’s societal impact and real world applications, all while parents and educators gather ideas for continuing the conversation after the event. The 2019 open house will feature approximately 25 activity stations drawing from Biomedical, Chemical, Computer, Electrical, Industrial, Mechanical & MicroElectronic Engineering. The activities are presented in an open house format continuously from 9am – 1pm.
Please RSVP. While attendance is free and open, we kindly ask the courtesy of an RSVP for both individuals and groups so we can better prepare. Please be aware that you are fully responsible for chaperoning your own participants, and that activity stations will be located throughout the college of engineering (not just in one room).
Who can come? This event is designed for girls in grades 5-9, but also parents, guardians, educators, and community group leaders who are interested in increasing the representation of females in engineering fields. Each activity will have an accompanying hand-out that adults can use to continue engineering conversations with the young women in their lives. (Boys and those above grade 9 and below grade 5 are also welcome to attend, though our target audience is girls in grades 5-9.)
Food. There is no food served at the WE@RIT Engineering Open House. Campus Dining locations, hours, and menu’s can be found here. For groups that want to arrange a dining experience at Gracie’s Dining Hall, group contracts are available. Please e-mail Erin Hartter, Business Support Administrator for Dining Services, or call her at 585-475-2228 for more information about getting a contract for your group. Please note that Gracie’s is approximately a 10-12 minute outside walk from the event location.
Financial assistance for schools. Though the event itself is free, WE@RIT would like to make this event as accessible as possible. To that end, through a generous donation from WE@RIT program sponsor L3Harris Corporation, a small number of travel/food stipends are available to eligible (see form) schools on a first-come-first-served basis. For more information please go to our website and view the Travel Stipend Request Form. Requests are capped at $600 per school and are only available to cover travel and/or lunch at Gracie’s for eligible schools attending the Engineering Open House. Requests are due to the WE@RIT office by Friday, October 25, 2019, and are granted on a first-come-first-served basis. All awardees are required to check-in at the WE@RIT welcome table upon arrival to the event.
Event website. Our event website will be updated in late October with the 2019 map and activity descriptions, however, you can enjoy looking over previous year’s activities in the meantime. If you have questions, we invite you to email our office. We hope to see you on November 2nd!
Directions. We encourage you to use the RIT Mobile app if you need interactive directions getting to James Gleason Hall, Building 9.
