Lee County us located in the Piedmont region of North Carolina. The states that border this county are: Chatham County (North), Harnett County (Southeast), Moore County (Southwest). Lee County was founded in 1907. It was named after the confederate hero Robert E. Lee. Sanford County was incorporated in Moore County in February 11, 1874 (31 years before the creation of Lee County). Sanford got its name from C.O. Sanford, a rail road engineer instrumental in the building of the rail lines that formed the foundation of what became the city of Sanford.
