FROM THE PRINCIPAL
The Illinois Assessment of Readiness (IAR) is the state assessment and accountability measure for Illinois students enrolled in a public school district. IAR assesses the New Illinois Learning Standards Incorporating the Common Core and will be administered in English Language Arts and Mathematics. This test replaces the PARCC that was given last year, but includes the same skills and format.
IAR assessments in English Language Arts and Mathematics will be administered to all students in grades 3-8. There are 2 ELA sessions and 3 Math sessions.
All D200 elementary schools will begin testing on Thursday, April 4. We will give 1 session per day. All testing will be completed by April 15. We will schedule testing on April 4, 5, 8, 11, and 12. This will allow days for make ups and an additional day for the 5th grade state science assessment.
Most important is that your child is physically and mentally prepared to show his/her best effort on these assessments. Please insist on a good night's sleep and offer a healthy breakfast. We will provide a positive environment, understanding that students may need movement breaks and encouragement.

APRIL CHARACTER FOCUS - RESILIENCE
Elementary school children may be starting to bump into the cliques and teasing that can occur as children begin to establish the "social order" of their schools. As they start to study subjects about the world outside of their homes, they look to teachers as well as to parents to make them feel safe and to help sort it all out. Make sure your child feels safe at home and at school.
Talk to your children. When they have questions, answer them honestly but simply and with reassurance that includes black-and-white statements that leave no room for doubt, such as "I will always take care of you." Don't discount their fears when they bring them to you.
When there is a situation outside of the home that is frightening, limit the amount of news your children watch or listen to. You don't need to hide what's happening in the world from your children, but neither do they have to be exposed to constant stories that fuel their fears. LIBRARY BOOKS
HEADPHONES, PLEASE!
Parents: Please check with your child to make sure they have working headphones here at school. If they need a pair they can buy them in our office for $5 or they can bring a pair from home.
Earbuds or over the ear headphones are fine... whatever works best for your child. Also make sure your child's headphones/earbuds are labeled with the student's name.
REMINDERS - CHROMEBOOK AGREEMENTS
I will not release personal information to strangers .
l will keep all accounts and passwords assigned to me secure, and will not share these with any other students.
l will clean my Chromebook with a soft, clean, cloth.
I will keep the screen clean and not touch the screen with my fingers.
I will transport the chromebook to and from school in the protective case and keep this case in my backpack.
CHARGING CHROMEBOOKS
It is the student's responsibility to be prepared for class each day, and that includes having a chromebook charged and ready to go.

APRIL IS AUTISM AWARENESS
April 2, 2019 is World Autism Awareness Day
Autism, or autism spectrum disorder (ASD), refers to a broad range of conditions characterized by challenges with social skills, repetitive behaviors, speech and nonverbal communication. According to the Centers for Disease Control, autism affects an estimated 1 in 59 children in the United States today.
Because autism is a spectrum disorder, each person with autism has a distinct set of strengths and challenges. The ways in which people with autism learn, think and problem-solve can range from highly skilled to severely challenged. Some people with ASD may require significant support in their daily lives, while others may need less support and, in some cases, live entirely independently.
