6th Grade Elective Selection
We are pleased to announce that our schedule for middle school students is in the process of being finalized for the following 2019-2020 school year at the Orlando Science Technology Drive Campus. In addition to our after school club offerings, 6th graders have a chance to choose elective classes provided during the regular school day. Most elective classes are one semester long and students will switch half way through the school year to their second elective; however, there are some courses that are year long courses.
Attached are the Elective Course descriptions. They go over the general summary of the different electives that are available. Please review the electives with your child and choose the top four electives that interest him/her. The 1st choice being their top choice. Please only submit one response. The link to choose your elective selections can be found through the button below:
Academic Preparation
Summer is important for families to spend time together, get rest, and be prepared for the following school year. Having fun is the biggest priority during summertime but we strongly recommend students spend some time on academics as well.
Review of Previous Year
Reading
Reading is the most important skill that needs to be instilled as a lifelong practice for each student. We are expecting students to read a minimum of 30 minutes every day. We encourage having discussions about the books. You can review the following link for sample questions: https://lexile.com/parents-students/tools-to-support-reading-at-home/21-questions-ask-child-book/
K-5th Grade Summer Reading Assignment
Summer reading has been a tradition of Orlando Science School since 2008. The summer is the perfect time for students to reap the many rewards of independent reading. As educators, we realize the importance of reading throughout the school year and would like to encourage reading during the summer as a way for students to maintain reading levels and skills they have acquired within the school year. More importantly, we hope that by encouraging independent reading, students will experience the many joys of reading and become lifelong readers and learners.
If your student chooses to complete the project, the Summer Reading Project should be returned to the classroom teacher during the first week of school, August 12-16, 2019. Three books are required to complete the project, however there is not a maximum that can be submitted. There are multiple projects that students may pick from, please see the document below for detailed instructions and book lists.
6th Grade Summer Reading Assignment
We’re excited to share our Summer Reading list for the 2019-2020 school year. We continue to adjust the program to give students the best possible experience while also upholding the desire to turn them into life-long readers. We know that people who read are more successful in all spheres of life, and we want to give your child her/his best opportunity to be successful both here at OSS and beyond. On the other side of this sheet, you’ll find the summer reading lists. Please note that you do not need to purchase copies of these books and the only summertime requirement is that all books are read prior to the first day of school. All additional work regarding the novel will be assigned after school has begun.
This year, 6th grade students are required to pick 1 novel from the 2019-2020 Sunshine State Reading List. Students will read one book from that list as their choice novel and we will complete a project once we return to school. It is important that the novel is read prior to the start of school so that students would have ample time to complete the project. Project requirements will be given out during the first 2 weeks of school and will be counted as the first major grade in the English Language Arts classes.
In addition to the Sunshine State book, students are asked to read and complete all the short stories for their designated grade level. Students are to answer all the questions that come after the stories, unless otherwise stated. These short stories will give students the insight of what our curriculum will be like and will have different genres that we will be using this year. The short stories packet will be due the first week of school. Packets are available on the main OSS web site if the student needs an additional copy.
We hope that, at the end of their time at OSS, all our students leave with a deep love of the English language and for the stories that connect us. We hope that the summer reading will give students insight as to what to expect from their English Language Arts classes this year. We hope that they are more compassionate, thoughtful, and intelligent people. We hope that they will develop wisdom and the ability to look beyond the surface of a thing to see its deeper truths, whether that “thing” is a book, a political situation, or another person. We hope that they are wise and just and true in their dealings with the world, and we know that great literature can help them to become all those things. We thank you for entrusting them to us, and we thank you for your support as we guide them through these literary encounters, even those that may not make immediate sense to you. We also welcome your feedback and conversation. If you have any questions regarding the middle school summer reading, please contact Katrina Frunker (frunker@orlandoscience.org).
Sincerely,
The OSS English Department

JR FLL
FIRST LEGO League Jr. is designed to introduce STEM concepts to kids ages 6-10 while exciting them through a brand they know and love – LEGO. Guided by adult coaches and FIRST Core Values, students build models using LEGO Education WeDo 2.0 and create Show Me posters to present what they learned. The program focuses on building interest in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) through a real-world challenge – to be solved by research, critical thinking, and imagination.
More information will be provided in early August during a parent meeting for interested students. Please email Ms. Coy at stephanie.coy@orlandoscience.org if you would be interested in coaching a team for the 2019-2020 school year and/or your student would be interested in joining Jr FLL.
Duke Tip
Students who scored in the 95th percentile or above on either their 6th grade or 5th grade state test (e.g. FSA) qualify for Duke TiP in 7th grade. The 95th percentile score may come from either Math or English subtests for Grade 6, or Math, English, or Science on the Grade 5 test.
For Florida students, scoring a 5, the highest-ranking score, on a subtest for the FSA does not automatically qualify a student for Duke TiP; the student needs a 5 along with a high enough Scale Score to qualify. The Scale Score that correlates with the 95th percentile is provided on the Duke TiP website.
For students joining us from out-of-state, as long as their state standardized testing results are provided their eligibility can be assessed.
For students who have not taken any state standardized testing, they may still qualify if they exhibit an IQ score of 125 or above.
Duke TiP enrichment activities are offered for students in Grade 6 and above as a club held weekly after the end of the regular school day. If your student qualifies and is interested in participating, they will be able to submit Duke TiP as one of their club preferences when the sign up process occurs at the end of the summer.
Students in Grades 4 and 5 who qualify for Duke TiP are identified but educational enrichment activities do not begin until Grade 6.
2019-2020 Middle School Soccer Tryouts(6th Grade Orcas)
