Opportunity from Prov. Public Library and the RI Historical Society:
Dear Rhode Island Educator,
We are all living through a historic moment together. RICovidArchive.org is a public archive created in response to COVID-19 by the Rhode Island Historical Society and Providence Public Library. The project has two goals:
- Create a sense of shared experience as we live our lives in social isolation;
- Document the experiences of Rhode Islanders for future generations.
We would love to hear the voices of young people across the state about how this has affected their lives. We encourage you to share this site with your students and their families or to integrate it into your lesson plans.
If you create a class assignment and would like to contribute the responses, (with the permission of students and parents/guardians) please contact us and we’ll help set up a folder where you can upload all the content as a collection. Soon we'll be offering grade-level appropriate lessons and submission templates to share with families or to work on as a class assignment. Email us at rica@rihs.org if you would like more information.
There’s really no limit to what people can contribute. But here are some ideas to get your students started.
PreK-2nd Grades
- Draw a picture of the people (and animals) that you spend your days with.
- Record a message for a person that you miss and tell them about your day.
- Write / Draw a thank you note to the “helpers” (doctors, nurses, postal service workers, grocery store employees, etc.).
- You be the teacher! Have a family member record a video of you teaching others how to wash their hands.
3rd-5th Grades
- Create a “nature log” of plants or animals that you observe near your home / in your yard / from your window.
- Draw or write your answers to the following:
- If a genie granted me three wishes, I’d ask for….
- My favorite part of last week was…
- The thing I’m looking forward to the most after quarantine is...
- Draw or take photos of food in your pantry or fridge. Extra points if you cook a recipe (get permission from the adults in your home first) and serve it to the people you live with. Write something about that experience.
- Interview an older person in your life (record a phone call or virtual meeting) and ask them to teach you a song or game they liked when they were your age.
