Vose Owl Notes
Family & Community Newsletter- June 2022
Vose Families,
Things are getting exciting around here! There has been so much growth in our students and our classroom communities this year. Social-emotional successes, stamina, and the ability to persist when things feel hard. Readers have blossomed, writers have improved their craft, and friendships have been formed. While this year has been challenging and full of changes we are seeing all of that hard work come together. Thank you, families, for your partnership in supporting your child as a learner. We have enjoyed having them grow with us.
In light of the recent events across our nation, the loss of life in an elementary school in Texas we have worked to support students' feelings and process with them. We also offer you a tool on how to talk to your child in case you find that helpful. We continue to ensure the safety and security of our school space for all.
In this month's newsletter, you will find some important information and resources. Important updates about Vose next year around construction and a change in our Assistant Principal. Resources to support problem-solving and reduce the incidents around bullying and mean behavior.
In the next few weeks will be able to hold many of our typical and fun end-of-the-year events and are looking for parent volunteers to help with Field Day and possibly other events, if you are interested please check for opportunities in My Impact. Remember to make sure your background check and vaccination card have been uploaded so you can help us celebrate with our students!
And we wish you all the best this summer...be sure to find time to read together, play together and learn together!
Happy June to all!
All good things,
Monique Singleton, Principal
Melissa Holz, Assistant Principal
Kelso's Wheel & Zones of Regulation
Kelso's Choices Wheel:
We regularly re-teach and review the Kelso's Choices as a strategy for solving problems that many of our students have learned in prior years. Below are links to versions parents can print for use at home as well. These are great tools for solving conflicts and helping small problems stay small, rather than making them bigger problems that are harder to manage.
Kelso's Choices is pretty simple. Kelso is a friendly frog (a puppet) who shares ideas on how he tries to solve problems from 9 peaceful choices. Our School Counselors, Mrs. Moyer and Ms. Phou will be teaching lessons in classrooms in February. Kids as young as preschool (and even those who aren’t strong readers yet) can benefit from learning Kelso’s Choices. The program puts power in kids’ hands to be problem solvers and gives everyone at school a shared language to help kids get along. We hope these posters below (just click on the poster you want to print) help empower your children to solve their problems at home as well! Here is some info for parents as well: https://kelsoschoice.com/free-resources/for-parents/

Beaverton City Library Resources
Hola hola from Beaverton City Library!
Summer Reading starts in June! We’ve made some changes to the program to make it easier for kids and families, so here’s the scoop:
* Beaverton City Library’s Summer Reading Program starts June 1! Babies, kids, and teens will get to choose a free book after they read, listen, and learn for 15 hours this summer. Encourage your students to read this summer, and share the linked Reading Log. Visit the library or www.BeavertonLibrary.org/SRP for details.
Summer Reading Program information:
How SRP works this year
Beaverton City Library is encouraging babies, kids and teens to read, listen, and learn for 15 hours this summer. There is no need to register, just keep track of their time, and once they reach 15 hours, come to the library to pick out a free book between July 5- August 15.
What counts as “reading, listening, and learning”?
Reading is just what it sounds like—reading books, e-books, graphic novels and comic books, reading newspapers, magazines, fiction, non-fiction, poetry. The traditional reading you probably remember from past Summer Reading Programs.
Listening also counts! Having an adult or older child read aloud to a child, listening to audiobooks, and Tumblebooks. This is a great way for babies and young kids to complete the Summer Reading program. (Not to mention busy teen/adults who listen to audiobooks in the car!)
Learning is another way of saying Family Activities: Kids taking time to do things with their families like building a blanket fort, or experimenting with rolling toy cars down ramps, and just taking time to talk to each other to reflect on the day are wonderful ways of learning, and we want to encourage families to take the time to keep their brains active together.
How can my students get a Reading log?
I dropped off the reading logs this morning in the office, please feel free to handout to staff. We just ask that you don’t give them out before June 1st.
Keep track of the time you spend reading with a reading log. Visit www.BeavertonLibrary.org/SRP for details and see how EVERYONE can Read Beyond the Beaten Path this summer!
Free Book
When complete, kids and teens will get to pick a brand-new free book from the library—there will be LOTS of choices at different levels with fiction, non-fiction, graphic novels, activity books, and more!
Events and Activities
Visit the events calendar, for all the in-person and virtual events and storytimes! Some programs require registration ahead of time and there are links on the calendar page.
We’ll also be out and about in the community this summer. We’ve love to see you at a park or summer meal site for storytimes and activities!

Changes in Vose's Assistant Principal for 2022-23 School Year
It is bittersweet to share the news that Melissa Holz will be leaving Vose to join the admin team at Bonny Slope Elementary as their Assistant Principal for next year.
Melissa has been a big part of our Vose community for the last eight years. However, I know you will also join me in wishing her well as she spreads her knowledge and many talents and gifts to another school community.
Some may be wondering who our Assistant Principal will be for the 2022-23 school year at Vose...
Please join me in welcoming Ellen Arnold, who comes to us from Springville K-8 as Assistant Principal for the last few years. Before that she had been a Student Supervisor at the same school, taught at the Singapore American School in Singapore, as well as working as a classroom teacher and ELD teacher in BSD... all in total she has been in BSD for 30 years. I think you will find Ellen to be warm, knowledgeable, resourceful & fun! She should be a great fit for Vose!
We welcomed our Pre-K
On May 19th, we were able to welcome many of Pre-Kindergarten students and families for the 2022-2023 school year. We were able to play, learn and explore together! Pre-K uses the Habits of Mind as a foundation of their learning like primary classes as well. Welcome to our youngest students!

FREE COVID KITS
As we near the end of the 2021-2022 academic school year, ODE and the Oregon Health Authority (OHA) are partnering to expand at-home COVID-19 testing for all children in Oregon’s public K-12 schools. OHA provided free, at-home iHealth COVID-19 tests for the Beaverton School District to distribute to our students. Each Vose student will receive one test kit, containing 2 tests, to take home the week of June 6th. This distribution represents one strategy to increase access to testing resources in our school communities.
If you have questions you can access information here in English and here in Spanish.
Students and families are encouraged to use the test kit for symptoms consistent with COVID-19 or who have had a known exposure to COVID-19 . If your student tests positive or experiences two of the following primary COVID-19 symptoms, they must stay home for 5 days from the onset of symptoms unless documentation of a negative COVID-19 test is provided.
● Fever of 100.4°F or higher
● Cough
● Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
● New loss of taste or smell
● Chills
Please be aware that muscle aches, headache, sore throat, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, new nasal congestion, and runny nose are also symptoms often associated with COVID-19.
If you’d like more information on how the Beaverton School District is addressing COVID-19 in our schools, including testing options, please visit our website. If you have questions, please don’t hesitate to email or call the office at 503-356-2890.
Congratulations to our Vose Owl Art Winner, 4th grader Hadley M. with her "Owl in the Night"
Recently we put out a call for students to show your Vose Owls Spirit! The district's Communications & Community Involvement office was looking for some help. You may or may not be aware that the district office is moving to a new location which will better support the central office in supporting our school district. In the new district office, there are going to be two feature walls. The displays on these walls are going to rotate; one wall will focus on staff; the other wall will focus on students. For every rotation, there will be a different prompt or theme.
So they were collecting content for the first round on the student and the staff wall: for Vose that would be a representation (pencil sketch, drawing with crayons/colored pencils, painting, collage, graphic art, etc.) of our school's mascot, an Owl.
Special recognition to all of our creative and talented entries:
Alice F, 4th grade
Norrie D, 1st grade
Monroe M.S., 1st grade
Aurelia E, 4th grade
Emelia C, 4th grade
Ashley A.A., 4th grade
Ella S., 4th grade
Melissa W. Kindergarten
Jecoliah I., 4th grade
Student Test Results in ParentVUE
State test scores are available in ParentVUE! For the English Language Arts and Math tests, a student’s score is available in Test History in ParentVUE two weeks after both parts of the test are completed. Science scores are available one week after the test is completed. The District’s Assessment webpage has links to additional information about your child’s scores. If you need assistance activating a ParentVUE account, please contact your child’s school. Learn more about ParentVUE. Students whose parents/guardians do not have an active ParentVUE account will receive a paper report of test scores this summer. Parents/guardians may request a printed report by contacting Kristie Hauss by email at kristina_hauss@beaverton.k12.or.us or by phone at 503.356.4594.

All Other Animals on District Property
The District recognizes that under proper conditions animals can be an effective teaching aid. At the same time, the presence of animals can result in problems with allergies, indoor air quality, noise, sanitation and hygiene. Therefore, domesticated animals are not allowed on District property and will not be brought on District grounds, into schools or transported on District buses. This includes but is not limited to horses, dogs, cats, rabbits, rodents, birds, amphibians, reptiles, and other encaged, aquatic, or farm animals.

Character Trait of the Month
June's Character Trait is PATIENCE- We will be reading about and defining integrity through examples at school and in books we read together. Nothing like the end of the year being time to practice patience!
At Vose, our teachers and staff integrate lessons and activities to emphasize, highlight and teach about each character trait and heritage month. We encourage families to also tell stories and share examples of these character traits and heritage months at home.
