Knox News!
May 2019
Welcome to May!
Hello Knox Families!
With just a few short weeks in the school year left, we have a lot going on here at Knox. During the month of April, our students showcased our musical Annie, Jr. Congrats to our students, Ms. Hesse, Ms. Stevens, Ms. Hammond, Mr. Hill and Mr. Nich for their work in supporting this production. This partnership with the La Jolla Playhouse as well as JumpStart Theatre has been amazing for our school. What a wonderful job Knox students did in their 2 showcase performances.
Our 7th grade students took a trip to Safari Park and our ASB also helped the students at Nye Elementary with their Fun Run. Our Knox students also had a blast at the Special Olympics event at Pershing Middle School. On April 23rd, 16 Knox staff members took students on a field trip to the University of San Diego for a college tour, and also got to enjoy a university baseball game (USD v SDSU).
Our English classes have been making monthly trips to the library to check out new books. Thank you so much to the Jimmie Johnson foundation for our library make-over.
The History department is using Active Classroom to help create sixth grade thematic curriculum. The Knox 6th grade science team participated in a lesson study this month, as a method of increasing collaboration to improve student learning outcomes in science.
This school year, Knox has received over $137,000 in grant funding! These grant awards are having a huge positive impact on our school!
Our state SBAC testing has started. Our students have begun the ELA Performance Task and 8th grade students have completed their State Science Test. Please see the links below for our testing schedule and for the online practice test. It is important that students get a good night's rest and arrive on time for breakfast each day of testing.
8th grade parents, this is a reminder that in order for your student to participate in the Knox promotion ceremony, they must be passing all of their classes on June 4th at 4pm in Power School. This deadline is approaching very soon. If you have questions or concerns about your child's grades, please email their teacher.

All Knox students will have nightly math homework. Homework is assigned from a math packet that is given to the students at the start of each chapter. Math tutoring is EVERY Tuesday in room S4 from 3:10-4:10. The late bus departs at 4:15 pm.
Please check your child's planner nightly. They should be recording their homework assignments there.
Please log into Power School Parent Portal to monitor your student's grades.
Thank you for all of your support and collaboration!
Sincerely,
Principal Potter

Jimmie Johnson Library Grant Update
English Language Arts Update
Our ELA classes continue to visit the library to check out independent reading books. We encourage all students to read for 20 minutes a night independently. Students can check out books during Advisory or lunch time. As the summer approaches, it is recommended that students have a library card for the Mountain View or Malcolm X library. All students also have access to Newsela.com online for current event articles.
To support literacy at home, read articles together with your child online:
