## Language Arts

This week in Writers' Workshops, the children have continued working on drafts of their Literary Non-Fiction piece. In order to produce a narrative about our chosen animals, we've been striving for a considered balance of factual information as well as vivid descriptive language. While this is proving challenging to master, some of the results that are being produced are quite impressive! We are busily and excitedly working towards completion and are looking forward to sharing with peers and parents over the coming weeks.

## Mathematics

The students have started on the topic, Fractions. We worked on adding and subtracting three kinds of fractions, 'like-fractions', 'unlike fractions' and 'related fractions'. We also discussed the use of Fractions in real-life.

The following week, the students will work on converting an Improper Fraction to a Mixed Number and vice versa, before we add and subtract them. The use of the 'Fraction key' on the calculator will also be introduced to the students.

Working on Fractions involves the use of times table, therefore, the students are strongly encouraged to practice their times table at home. The children are also working on their mental mathematics skills each week and moving up through leveled challenges. Times tables is a strong feature of these challenges.

* The blue Mathematics folders have been sent home, along with the students’ 2nd test (BODMAS and Word problems). Please sign the test and return to school promptly.

## IPC

This week, saw the beginning of our Science work. The children have been learning all about soil and how important it is to our planet.

They started by gaining new knowledge about soil, how it is formed and the different types. They then carried out their first exercise in field work - sampling soil from different areas of the school grounds.

Once back in class, the children analysed the soil samples and discussed their findings. We also looked at how soil erosion takes place and what we can do to stop it.

Finally at the end of the week, we began to question where rocks come from and how they are also made.

Next week the children will be carrying out their first scientific investigation into the weathering of rocks.
