Together We Will Learn, Excel, and Succeed

A Message from Mrs. Fockler, Principal

July 21st Edition

Dear Lewistown Families,

It’s July! I love the long days and warm air. My family and I are enjoying spending time outside walking on the C&O Canal, barbecuing and picking blueberries! I hope you and your families are enjoying the summer too.

We have had many inquiries from families about the details of the starting of school. We have spent weeks preparing how we will welcome our students back to school, but safety guidelines are ever changing. FCPS has been actively planning and preparing for the start of the 2020-2021 school year. As you can imagine, this work has been challenging and incredibly complex. Whether it is 100% remote, 100% face to face, or some combination of both, our Lewistown staff are committed to providing our students with a high quality education.

Our teachers have been working hard this summer training to meet the needs our students academically and emotionally. The past few months in distance learning have taught us a lot and we are well prepared to offer a rigorous learning experience for students in the fall, no matter what option is selected.

While much is to be decided about what school may look like in the fall, know that we are all in this together and will work collaboratively to transition back to school. Our number one priority is the safety and well-being of our students and staff. We look forward to a healthy, safe school year in which great learning will occur.

More information will be coming your way from both FCPS and LES in the near future. I plan to send out bi-weekly newsletters throughout the summer to provide updates about the next school year. I am looking forward to meeting each and every one of you!

May you continue having a relaxing and enjoyable summer!

Together in heart and mind,

Mrs. Belinda Fockler, principal

A Special Message from Mrs. Byard, Media Specialist

Congratulations to the following students for participating in the MD Black-Eyed Susan Chapter Book Award Program. To participate, students in 4th and 5th grade committed to reading at least eight of the ten nominees, and taking a short quiz for each. Several students read all ten! These students had either met the goal, or were well on their way, when we switched to distance learning. Many took these nominees home with them and continued to take the quizzes from home.

Congratulations to all who participated and read some great books!

A Message from Ms. MacKay, LES Coordinator of Specialized Programs

Happy Dog Days of Summer!

We, as a school system, have been focusing on trauma and social emotional learning. Our very own superintendent, Dr Alban, has been hosting a book club related to this topic. The book being explored is entitled, Eyes are Never Quiet. Please feel free to join our group and participate in the twitter discussions coming up or engage in the potential face to face in August.

The Covid 19 Pandemic is trauma. Our lives are different given the precautions necessary to keep us healthy and safe. These precautions like wearing a mask and practicing social distancing can be difficult for children and adults. I have attached a child friendly link to explain why we need to wear masks.

In our summer school updates, I will be inviting you to explore a link or two related to social emotional learning. They are student friendly presentations that can help families host a dialogue with their child related to feelings. Take a moment and check out this link on strategies to help manage feelings.

Hopefully exploring these links with children over the summer will assist in easing back to school and into the community as we transition to a new normal. I am available via email but I also will be at Lewistown on Tuesdays and Thursdays throughout the summer. I am happy to talk and connect you to any necessary resources you may need.

Stay Calm and Be Mindfully Happy

Social Distancing Resources for Kids

One of the best ways for kids to understand a variety of topics is through stories. These resources provide visual guides for students about social distancing and why it is important.
