Message from the Principal
Dear Central Road Families,
Thank you to all of the families that attended our Halloween Dance on Friday!
A few gentle reminders about Halloween:
- Students should wear their normal school clothing on Thursday morning. Students will have time to change into their Halloween costumes after lunch.
- Please follow the guidelines I have shared in previous newsletters. Please remember that weapons and other suggestions of overt violence and the use of fake blood are not allowed. Costumes should be fun rather than scary. Masks are not allowed on student’s faces. Clown costumes are not allowed, as they do scare children.
- If your child is going home for lunch to change into their costumes, an adult must come to Central Road to sign them out.
This week, our teachers in kindergarten, second and third grade received training on one of our Fountas and Pinnell Classroom (FPC) Resources. The resources for Interactive Read-Alouds (IRAs) will be embedded into the literacy blocks, beginning this week. Interactive read-alouds are teacher-led. The teacher will read a selected text to the whole class, selectively prompt students with higher level thinking questions, and allow for student discussion. These lessons are important because they allow readers to experience rich, interesting texts that are grade level appropriate, regardless of the student’s reading level. The structure of the lesson also builds a community of learners that share information about literacy.
Below is a photo of students engaged in a lesson, while our teachers complete a lesson study.
Warmest regards,
Patti Van Winkle

Parent-Teacher Conferences
As a parent it is extremely important that you set aside time to not only attend your child’s conference, but also to prepare to make the most out of the one-on-one time you have with your child’s teacher. Your child’s teacher will have information for you about assessments your child has taken and examples of their classroom work. Teachers will also talk to you about your child’s level of engagement in classroom activities, how your child is progressing socially, and provide you with a preview of what you can expect for the remainder of the year at your child’s grade level.
Just like teachers prepare for conferences with you, parents can benefit from a little pre-planning for your conference with the teacher.
Follow these quick tips to prepare:
- Before the parent teacher conference, talk to your child. Ask them about their favorite and least favorite parts of their school day and why they feel that way.
- *Ask your child who they sit with at lunch and during their classes and if there are any issues as a result.
- Ask your child if they are having difficulty in any of their subjects. If they are expressing difficulty, encourage them to let their teacher know and ask for help and then bring that information with you to the conference.
- Ask yourself if there are any changes in your home that may be affecting your child at school and decide if this is important to share with your child’s teacher.
- Bring any assignments your child has brought home that you have questions about with you to the conference.
- Make a note to ask your child’s teacher about homework and daily reading requirements.
- If you are unable to make it to your assigned conference time, contact your child’s teacher to arrange for another time.
Parent teacher conferences are a great opportunity to get to know a little more about your child’s day and help build a strong home-school partnership that is the foundation of student success. We look forward to welcoming you on November 25-26! Thank you for signing up during Parent Orientation. Teachers will be sending home reminder cards prior to conferences.
