Designated & Integrated ELD
Did you know there is a difference between designated and integrated ELD? Integrated ELD, happens daily in all content areas. These are teaching strategies many of you use on a daily basis. Strategies can include but are not limited to: structured student talk, graphic organizers, sentence / response frames, and several others. Basically these are the strategies teachers use to help English learners, as well as, all students access the academice content. As an English learner learning a new language as well as the common core, grade level standards can be a daunting task. Students may struggle to understand academic content when they don't understand language and the use of language in that subject area. Visuals such as pictures and graphic organizers, as well as, sentence frames can assist English learners better access and comprehend academic content. Integrated supports are an essential part of our English learners' success but this is only one piece of the pie. English learners also require Designated ELD daily. This daily practice allows students to develop their English language skills. This subject and seperate course is comparable to teaching / learning a foreign language. The purpose of Designated ELD is only to learn the target langauge (English) and how that language works. When students recieve daily ELD their language fluency improves and comprehending the language helps to improve academics. Another way of looking at Designated ELD is comparable to that of an IEP (individual education plan) student receiving services to assist with their disability, both are crucial to student success and both are legally required.
