"Ring of Fire" Solar Eclipse
On Saturday, October 14, an annular solar eclipse will sweep across the Americas. An annular eclipse is when the moon covers part of the sun due to the moon's position in its orbit causing an illusion of a ring of fire in the sky.
The Woodlands will experience a 80-85% partial eclipse. The partial eclipse will begin at 10:27 am and finishes by 1:38pm in the afternoon.
Do not look at the eclipse without eye protection! Never look directly at the Sun. You can seriously hurt your eyes, and even go blind. Proper eye protection, like eclipse glasses or a special solar filter, is the only safe option. Sunglasses don't work.
If you get eclipse glasses, don't throw them away! The next total eclipse will cross Texas on April 8, 2024.

Nurse Kendall's Update
Dear Parent/Guardian:
Our school will do spinal screenings on November 8, 9, 10, 2023. State law requires that schools must screen students for abnormal spinal curvature in accordance with the following schedule:
• Girls will be screened two times, once at age 10 (or fall semester of grade 5) and again at age 12 (or fall semester of grade 7).
Trained screeners (the nurses) will check your child for signs of spinal problems like scoliosis. Catching a spinal problem early can make the treatment much easier. Not treating spinal problems can lead to serious health problems. The screening is simple. Screeners will look at your child’s back while he or she stands and bends forward. Your child will NOT be asked to remove her shirt. The screening will take place during PE in a separate area. Students will NOT have to stand in front of everyone for the screening.
The school will send you a letter if your child does not pass the screening with recommendations to follow up with a doctor. This screening is not a medical exam. Your child still needs to see a doctor for checkups.
The following video is a great reminder of why the screening is important:

Choir
The 2023-2024 Collins Cobra Choir is off to a great start! We’ve been working very hard in preparation for our upcoming concert on October 30th at The Woodlands College Park HS where we will be performing alongside students from Wilkerson Intermediate, Knox Junior High, and the College Park Chorale.
6th Grade Solo Contest participants, starting Wednesday, October 11, we will have Wednesday morning rehearsals at 8:00 AM. While these rehearsals are not required, it is highly recommended that your student attend as many as possible (there are only 3) in order to prepare for the contest on the 28th. If mornings don’t work, please feel free to reach out to Mr. McKnight, and we can try to find another time.
PE
As we wrap up the first grading period, we want to give a shout out to all the kids that come out and try their best! We talk a lot about trying each sport and giving it good effort, even if it’s not their favorite sport. 🙂 We love seeing everyone being active! Great job! We will begin our Lacrosse unit next week. Our next Cobra Cardio days are 10/12 and 10/20. Remember those sneakers and water bottles!
