SMS Middle Ground
Connecting Home and School : February 2017
Mid-Term Progress Reports
If you do not have a Family Access account or if you would like help logging in or getting internet access, swing by the SMS office and we can help you! We have a parent computer kiosk ready for you from 7 AM to 4 PM each school day.
If you do not have internet at your home, there is one more way you can keep up with academic progress. You can ask your child to bring you a screen shot of his/her progress grades. A simple plan might be to expect a screen shot on the iPad every Friday. This engages your student and informs you!

Attendance Matters
Showing up back at school after an absence is not our battle at SMS.
Parent contact to notify school about the reason for the absence is our battle.
If your child is absent for school for any reason, it is imperative that we hear from you about the reason for the absence. Every single absence is marked in Harmony, coded truant, and then changed to ill, medical documented, bereavement, or personal based on parent contact. If you fail to contact SMS, your child's absence remains coded as truant.
Unresolved truancies result in discipline.
Please make every effort to call school on the day of the absence or send a note with your child on the first day back to school. Attendance matters. And attendance record keeping matters, too! Thanks for your help. Contact Miss Nass or Mr. Smith if you have any questions!
Canvas- Where the work lives!
If you want to know more about the living work (assignments, keynotes, video clips, rubrics) of your SMS student, create a parent account on Canvas. Parent observer accounts allow you to see your child's course pages and your child's submitted work without the ability to mess things up! If you have a student who answers 'nothing' when you ask 'what you did in school today?', you will love the insider view that Canvas parent accounts provide. Get your free account using these steps.
MAKING AN ACCOUNT
1) Grab your student. (you'll need his/her Canvas log in information to create your account.)
2) Log on to the SMS web site on a computer (not phone).
3) Locate the Canvas icon (in resource section, right hand column).
4) Select the icon and open up a purple log in screen.
5) Select "Need a Canvas Account, Click Here, It's Free!" in the upper right hand corner.
6) Select "Parents Sign Up Here" to open your sign up screen.
7) Enter YOUR parent name as username, your email, and your student's username and password (this is why you need your kid with you!)
USING AN ACCOUNT
Once you have a username and password, you can open Canvas from any computer, tablet, or phone. A great parent 'hack' is to open Canvas, enter your password, and save your observer view as a web clip on your home screen. School activity in one click!! Cool!
