Parents & Guardians:
Vaping Amongst Middle and High School Students
Several news outlets recently published information regarding vaping and the use of vaping to smoke marijuana. This school-based survey shows that nearly 1 in 11 U.S. students in middle and high school have used marijuana in electronic cigarettes. This information has heightening health concerns about the new popularity of vaping among teens. These results published Monday mean approximately 2.1 million middle and high school students have used them to get high. Because of this information, the FDA announced that last week vaping has reached “epidemic” levels among teens.
Due to this startling information we feel it is our responsibility to stay diligent in educating and monitoring our children and students. By no means are we stating that we are aware of a major problem within our halls and community, however, we would be naïve in light of this new data to think that it is not something that has piqued the interest of our students. Many students are able to “get away” with using these devices as they have the appearance of a computer flash drive. Children are able to freely walk around with these devices due to the appearance and size. Due to the relatively newness of the vaping phenomena, not enough data is yet available to understand the possible long term affects this may have as our teens grow into young adults.
With this new data in mind Shepherd Hill Regional High School is hosting a presentation that will be put on by the Central MA Tobacco Free Community Partnership in conjunction with the Department of Psychiatry, University of Massachusetts Medical School. This event will take place on October 17, 2018 at 6:00 PM in the Shepherd Hill Auditorium. Also, please find links to important information regarding vaping. If you have any questions or concerns please contact our guidance department, Mr. Olson or Mr. Packard at 508-248-1423.

We all understand that there may be a need to have your child ride an alternative bus for childcare purposes. However, if this need arises we would ask that we receive notes from both families so we are aware that the parents know that another child is going over their house. We also would add that some of our buses are already full so please keep this for childcare purposes only - Thanks for understanding.
