Mashburn Elementary
A Message from Mrs. Gravitt
Dear Mashburn Parents,
Happy 2019! Wow, what a GREAT beginning to the New Year we have had at Mashburn Elementary. Students were welcomed back with excitement on January 8th from Forsyth Central High School students & teachers, board members, staff from Lakeside, and our district Safety department from Forsyth County Sheriff’s department. It was AWESOME and we are so thrilled to have all of our students back! Teachers and students have been working diligently as they have gotten back into the routine. Also, some new Makerspaces/Critical Thinking Centers have been set up in the Media Center. Students will begin utilizing these stations within the next 2 weeks. Thank you for all your support and collaboration as we have the best job of all, spending each day with your wonderful children!
Sincerely,
Carla Gravitt

Survey responses are anonymous and will be submitted directly to the Georgia Department of Education for analysis. The Georgia Parent Survey is also available in Spanish. Parents may select the Spanish version within the survey. The Georgia Parent Survey can be accessed here.
PTO News
This year flying by and you are making this one of our best years yet! Thank you!
Our membership, students, and teachers have accomplished so much together and we could not be more grateful! You continue to prove that Together, We Are Better!
Speaking of accomplishments, have you seen the addition to the back playground? That is all because of you, our families!
While we were all enjoying our Winter Break there were some busy folks at school installing the new addition to the back playground. Together you, our students, parents and teachers, raised more than enough money, through our Glow Run, to fund not only the new addition to the playground but also swings that are planned to be installed very soon!
We have our very first Bingo Night coming up on Friday, January 25 at 6:30 p.m.! We are so excited for this new event and we can not wait to see you there! Prizes like a Nintendo Switch, TV, Kindle and other generous donations from area businesses will be awarded to our Bingo winners. We hope you're the one shouting, "Bingo!" next Friday night! Please be sure to see the flyer that was sent home with your students earlier this week for ticket information.
In order to make this event a success, we do need some volunteers to help set up, distribute cards at the event, or help clean up after the event. This is a great opportunity to continue to build community within our school and we hope to see you there! If you would like to volunteer or have questions, please contact Leslie Scott at scottleslie2008@yahoo.com.
"The Greatest Showman" Father/Daughter dance is on Friday, February 8 in the Cafe. We are in need of volunteers to help make this a memorable night for our girls and their Dads. Our chair, Kimbie Grovijohn, is planning a very special night and would love for you to be involved! Your help will ensure our students have a special night they won't soon forget! Please contact her or Leslie Scott for more information on how you can help!
Working together at these events shows our students just how much you care for them and want the best for each of them. Thank you so much to our many volunteers who give their time to our PTO events and school! You are making a difference in each of our students lives and making our community stronger.
Message from Nurse Jamie
Hello Blue Bear Parents!
We are currently in the middle of cold and flu season, it might be helpful to review our wellness and medication policy. Students must be fever free for 24 full hours without fever reducing medications before returning to school. The CDC defines a fever as 100.0 degrees F or higher. Students must be free of vomiting, and free from diarrhea for a full 24 hours before returning to school. Encouraging things such as covering sneezes and coughs with the inner elbow, frequent hand washing, and avoiding touching face/nose/eyes are all helpful in preventing the spread of contagious illnesses. If you would like your student to have medication (either prescription or over-the-counter) while at school, please review our policy, which is posted on our website:
https://www.forsyth.k12.ga.us/mashburn. Choose “Student Services”, then “School Nurse” to view. Most importantly, medication must be brought from an adult to either myself or the front office staff, with the required paperwork completed (also available on the school website) It is very important to note that for safety reasons, students are never to transport medication to or from school. If you would like to donate some supplies to the clinic, we always appreciate tissues, paper cups, small cans or bottles of ginger ale, and snack or sandwich size Ziploc style bags. We also welcome any size clean pull-on pants to keep the extra clothes closet stocked. Please feel free to call or email me with any questions or concerns you may have. The health and wellness of our students is my top priority. It is an honor to serve Mashburn Elementary!
Warmest Regards,
Jamie Troup BSN, RN

100th Day of School Celebration
Can you believe that the 100th day of school is quickly approaching on Wednesday, January 23rd? Our Mashburn Blue Bears will be 100 days smarter! To celebrate this accomplishment, teachers are encouraging students to dress-up like they are 100 years old. We look forward to welcoming our “elderly” Blue Bears on the 23rd!
Counselor's Corner
This month, Mashburn counselors are continuing to prepare students to be college and career ready by conducting part 2 of a 3 part lesson which focuses on the career clusters/pathways. Since there are a variety of careers students can learn about in a single career cluster, students are encouraged to explore the careers in which they are interested in greater detail by visiting http://www.gacollege411.org or http://www.gadoe.org and clicking on the “students” link
Lost and Found: We have a huge selection of Jackets, hoodies, sweaters and water bottles.
Girls On the Run
Girls on the Run is a school based organization that inspires girls to recognize their inner strength and celebrate what makes them one of a kind. Trained coaches lead small teams through our research-based curriculum which includes dynamic discussions, activities and running games. Over the course of the ten-week program, girls in 3rd-8th grade develop essential skills to help them navigate their worlds and establish a lifetime appreciation for health and fitness. The program culminates with girls positively impacting their communities through a service project and being physically and emotionally prepared to complete a celebratory 5K event. Mashburn’s second season of Girls on the Run will begin in February. Registration is now open! For more information on how to register for this amazing program, please visit their website at https://www.girlsontherunnorthga.org/
