Update on postseason formats for Debate, Music and One Act Play
The advisory committees in Debate, Music, and One Act Play have recommended, and the League has approved, the implementation of a virtual format for conducting postseason events.
To assist directors and educators in planning contests this school year, the League has compiled information for each activity to help guide these early stages.
Debate
- Teams are currently participating in competitions virtually.
- If a school is in a virtual-only mode for activities, all practice and competition should be virtual.
- If a school switches to distance learning, students can continue to participate in virtual practice and competition.
- Sections are moving ahead with plans for virtual tournaments, with support from the Debate Advisory Committee.
- Additional guidance to follow regarding Section Tournaments.
- If approved by MSHSL Board of Directors, State Tournament will be virtual.
Music
- No section or sub-section contests should be held prior to February 1, 2021.
- Solo and Ensembles section contests will be held using a virtual platform.
- The use of a virtual platform for Large Group is under review.
- Guidance and information will follow for Region Secretaries, music educators and judges.
- League Staff will work with the NFHS on Copyright waivers that have been granted by publishers. That guidance and information will be shared when available.
One Act Play
- If a school is in a virtual-only mode for activities, all rehearsals and meetings should be virtual.
- Plans are being created for sub-section and section tournaments to operate virtually, with support from the One Act Play Advisory Committee,
- Teams will submit videos of their production.
- Productions may be recorded in person or via a videoconference.
- See One Act Play Section Guidance and Information for details.
- If approved by MSHSL Board of Directors, State Festival will be virtual.
The League will continue to share information and guidance throughout the planning and implementation process of these contests.

Repeat: Website Tasks and Q/A Sessions
Thank you for your continued important work in building the MSHSL website and information systems. A number of upcoming tasks require significantly more involvement and time than first-year tasks.
If you have not already done so, please use this list with directions and helpful links for a number of tasks to complete by November 20:
- Assigning Head Coach Certification to those qualified as head coaches
- Checking and adjusting entries in your School and Coach Directory
- Adding your school's athletic medical personnel to the website
- Enrolling coaches and advisors for Winter and Spring activities and sports
- Building and editing Team Pages for your school
- Assuring the accuracy of Activities and Sports on your School Page.
To assist you in managing these tasks, we have scheduled three Question and Answer sessions to bring questions forward and learn informally. There will not be an agenda for these sessions, but please bring your questions.
- These sessions are open to both ADs and others in their office.
- Attend one, two or all three.
Fridays | November 6, 13, and 20 | 12:30-1:15 p.m.
