Physical & Chemical Changes
By Anthony Ferrante
Physical Property
Any characteristic of a material that can be observed or measured with out changing the identity of the material.
Examples:
1. Color and Shape
2. Length and Mass
3. Volume and Density (D=M/V)
Physical Change
The physical property of a substance does not change.
Examples:
1. Changing from one state of matter to the next.
(ice melts to liquid-liquid boils to steam)
2. Melting 0 degrees C, and boiling point 100 degrees C.
3. Slicing bread, melting ice, mowing lawn.
Chemical Property
Any characteristic that gives a substance the ability to undergo a change that results in a new substance.Examples:1. Flammability (ability to burn)2. Reacts with oxygen (ability to rust)3. Reacts with light (pictures being developed)4. Reacts with water (medicine dissolving in water)
Chemical Change
Any change in the identity of a substance due to the chemical properties of that substance (You have a new substance) (NOT revisable)
Examples:
1. Flammability (fire burning to ash)
2. Reacts with oxygen (fruit rotting)
3. Heat and light (vitamins can change exposed to light)
4. Electricity (water can be broken down with electricity)
