Welcome Back Lions!

Welcome to Susan LaVorgna Elementary, Home of the Lions! My name is Lisa Brown, and I am so thrilled to be starting my fourth year as your principal. Erin Nielsen is joining us this year as our Assistant Principal, and we are excited to begin a new year. In addition, Manuel Graniel is joining the Administrative Team as our Intervention Administrator. Each new school year brings new opportunities to learn and grow together. Whether you've been part of the LaVorgna community for many years, a few months, or this is your first visit, you are now a part of a special community that places a high priority on quality learning and instruction. The LaVorgna community is a place where character matters and that, above all else, values its children.

This year we have several teachers joining us. Mrs. Barrington is joining Mrs. Wonacott teaching Kindergarten. Mrs. MacLean will be teaching TK-1st Grade SDC and Mrs. Moore will be teaching 2nd/3rd Grade SDC and Mr. Stein is joining the fifth grade team. All of them are extraordinary teachers, and we are so very fortunate that they are now LaVorgna Lions. Please help us in welcoming all our staff members to our Lion family!

We are looking forward to making this year exciting, engaging, and successful for all of our Lions.

Beginning Monday, August 12th, at 5:00 p.m., you can log into your parent portal and view your child's teacher. On the first day of school, please report to your child's line on the blacktop (as marked by their room number). You can also access the portal throughout the year to view your child's grades.

If you do not know your username or password, please call the office at 294-6385 to get your portal information.

Please take a moment to read and review our updated Parent-Student Handbook. It contains valuable information about our school procedures and expectations. Continue to use it as a reference throughout the school year.

The safety of all our Lions is a top priority for the entire staff. In an effort to know exactly who is on our campus at all times, we will continue to remain a closed campus this year. Beginning Monday, August 19th, only students will be allowed to enter through the arrival gates on campus. Any adult that wishes to enter our campus may still do so, but must sign in at the front office and wear a visitor's sticker while on campus.

We will be permitting adults to enter and walk their students to class or the first three days of school only, August 14-16th. We thank you in advance for your support and cooperation in ensuring the safety of all of our students.

Wednesday Flag Salute

We will be holding flag salutes on Wednesdays. Wednesdays allow for both early and late bird kindergartners to be at the flag salute. Please join us on Wednesdays as we honor one student from each class with the Pride of the Lions. We also recognize students for great behavior with our "Lions' Mane" award as well as recognize kinder and first graders who have mastered the grade level sight words. Teachers will let you know in advance if your student is being spotlighted so you can arrange to attend. We hope you will join us on Wednesdays to celebrate our Lions and showcase our school spirit.

Please be mindful of the school parking lot procedures. The line closet to the curb is a moving lane for student drop off and pick up only. If you need o park, please do so in the lot. Please remember to use cross walks when crossing through the parking lot and the street. Remember that we want to model safe practices for our students. Common courtesy and patience is always appreciated as we move over 900 students in and out of our campus within 15 minutes.

PBIS: Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports

What is PBIS?

PBIS is a framework used to create:

  • Pro-social student behavior
  • Proactive discipline structure within a school

How does it help create a positive school culture?

PBIS uses:

  • Predictable and common language, vision (understanding of expectations) and experiences
  • Positive and regular recognition of positive behavior
  • Safe environment where disruptive behavior is not tolerated
  • Consistent expectations where all adults use the same expectations

Every month, each classroom teacher will teach a behavior standard and the expectations for locations throughout the school site for the targeted behavior. The goal is to explicitly teach our students the shared expectations we have for them when they are on campus. This allows for us, as a site, to have common language for behavior and locations expectations. It also allows for staff on campus to have the same expectations and language when we are re-teaching or correcting an undesired behavior.
