Independent Novel Study
The Choice is Yours!
What does this mean exactly?
You are going to select a book from my shelves, the library, something you have at home that you have been waiting to read, a friend that has something you want to read, etc. YOUR CHOICE! The book must be age appropriate and something that interests you. Once you have selected a book, please get it approved by Mrs. Rabourn (she will need to check your name off and make note of the novel you have chosen).
I have noted a couple of options students have chosen in the past.
The Assignment
PART 1: Each week you will send a detailed response explaining what is going on in the section of the novel you have read (you must make note of the page range covered). You should include the major events going on, the characters that are present, how characters develop over the course of the reading, notable direct quotes from the reading to support your detailed response, etc.
PART 2: In a separate response, you will reflect on what you have read. What do you think about the events and characters in each section? What connections can you make to the storyline and/or characters? Do you enjoy the reading - why or why not?
You can either write or video record your response/reflection each week. Just upload either option to the Canvas assignment when due.
The Final Project(s)
For the final project, you will select 2 of the listed projects to complete. There are 4 different categories or projects to choose from; you need to choose 2 total projects from 2 different categories.
Below you will see the categories listed and the corresponding projects. For a more detailed explanation of each project option, including examples and the rubric, you can view each in the Independent Novel Study module on Canvas.
