Girls Basketball Cruises to First Area Win
The Hewitt-Trussville Girls Basketball team opened area play on Monday night by defeating Gadsden City 65-16. With the win, the Huskies improved to 10-1 overall on the season and 1-0 in 7A Area 7. Coach Tonya Hunter’s team got off to a quick start and led 24-2 after the opening quarter. The Huskies extended the lead to 40-9 as the teams went to the locker room at halftime.
Erica Jones led the team in scoring as she netted 17 points. Three other players scored in double figures for Hewitt. Morgan Kirk scored 15, London Coleman scored 11, and Leah Harrison added 10 points. Coach Hunter said, “It was important for us to get off to a good start in area play. I am pleased that we were able to do that tonight.”
The Huskies will be back at home again on Friday as Grissom visits for another area contest. Tip-off is scheduled for 6pm.
Boys Basketball Wins OT Thriller
The Boys Basketball team started area play with an exciting game that went into overtime. The Huskies prevailed over Gadsden City 68-64. With the win, Hewitt improved to 7-2 overall on the year and 1-0 in 7A Area 7. Coach Marcus Thomas’ team trailed for much of the game. The Titans led 33-31 at halftime. The second half was back-and-forth with each team making big shots.
With the score tied at 60 late in regulation, Gadsden City had a chance to win it. The Husky defense stood strong and sent the game into overtime. Gadsden City again had a two point lead in overtime when TJ Alexander scored and was fouled. He made the free throw to give the Huskies the lead for good. With seven seconds left Hewitt had the ball up by two. Damon Harper caught the in bounds pass, raced down the floor, and made the layup to give the team a four point lead.
Coach Thomas said, “It is always a hard fought game when you play Gadsden. They are a top 10 team. I am really pleased with how these guys continue to push through adversity and stay in the moment. It was a great win for the Huskies. Everyone did their part and stepped up to the plate.”
Hewitt will host Grissom on Friday as area play continues. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30pm.

Bowling Defeats Clay-Chalkville
The Hewitt-Trussville Bowling teams picked up another area win this week.
On December 7, the Boys team defeated Clay-Chalkville 1325-1031. The team was led by Hunter Bailey who bowled a 201. With the win, the Huskies improved to 9-5 overall on the season and 7-1 in area play.
The Girls team picked up a 880-835 win over Clay-Chalkville on Thursday. Coach Tommy Abney's team was led by the combo game of 123 by Grace Borch and Madeline Newman. Hewitt is now 8-5 overall on the season and 7-1 in area play.
The teams will be off until after Christmas break. The Huskies will travel to Pinson Super Bowl to face off with Pinson Valley on January 4.
Indoor Track: Holiday Invitational Recap
Boys Indoor Track:
The Boys Indoor Track team traveled to the Birmingham Crossplex on Saturday to compete in the 2017 Holiday Invitational. The Huskies had an outstanding performance as they finished 3rd out of 25 teams. Coach Davis Dobbs said, “The Boys coming in 3rd is a great start to the season, especially with the kids having a snow day Friday. We had all relays and four individuals on the podium, plus Jake Diggs placing 4th in the nation in the 400 Meter was a great spark also. The pieces are starting to come together for a big run to State after Christmas.” Hewitt will be off until after the Christmas break. They will return to action on January 5 as they compete in the Icebreaker Invitational.

Girls Indoor Track:
The Hewitt-Trussville Girls Indoor Track team had many positive performances on Saturday at the Holiday Invitational. Overall, the team finished 10th out of 22 teams. Coach Hebert Clark said, “I am really proud of the way our student-athletes responded to their individual challenges. We will continue to refine our competitive drive and endurance to keep ourselves in a position to compete for a championship.” The team will return to the Birmingham Crossplex after the break for the Icebreaker Invitational.

Wrestling Heads North this Weekend
Last week the Huskies went 2-0 in a tri-match on Tuesday. On Thursday, the team fell to Oak Mountain by a score of 43-28.
Coach David Barden's team will be at home just one more time this season. On January 4, Vestavia will visit Bryant Bank Area for a Dual Match.

8th Grade Girls Basketball Still Undefeated
The 8th Grade Girls Basketball team improved to 8-0 on the year as they won two games in the past week.
On December 7, the Huskies defeated Irondale 67-15. Kenleigh Cahallan led the team with 13 points. April Hooks also scored in double figures as she scored 11 points.
On December 11, Hewitt hosted Clay-Chalkville. Coach Todd Carlile's team again played well as they came away with a 52-5 win. Nine players scored for the Huskies led by Maddie Wallace who scored 10 points.
7th Grade Girls Win Two Games
On December 11, Coach Morgan Griffin's team defeated Clay-Chalkville 38-20. Hannah Dorsett scored 16 points for the Huskies. DeAndrea Powell added 10 points for the winning team.
8th Grade Boys Go 1-1 This Week
This weekend the team will travel to north Alabama for a two-day Christmas tournament.

Middle School Wrestling Defeats Thompson
Last weekend the team was scheduled to compete at Pelham and Homewood, but those events were cancelled due to weather. The team will travel to Homewood Thursday for a tri-match with Homewood and Clay-Chalkville.
