The Buzz
What's Happening in Our Hive
This newsletter is intended to let families know what third graders are working on in class and how third grade classrooms are participating in school-wide events. Please make sure you are still checking your student's red folder every night for important communications from the PTO, school administration, or central office.
This Week in Third Grade
Mathematics- Third graders are wrapping up their unit on fractions. They have been practicing with equivalent fractions, putting fractions on a number line, comparing and computing using fractions. Please talk to your children when you use fractions (filling up the gas tank half-way, measuring 3/4 cup of cheese for macaroni, "it is a quarter till bedtime," etc.).
Science- In honor of the Spring season, we will be studying plant life cycles, parts of plants, and the impact that healthy plants have on our environment.
Third Grade Spelling Bee
The Claxton Third Grade team is excited to announce our first annual spelling bee!!! Our goal is to provide a motivating, fun, and engaging opportunity for the spelling mastery of high-frequency words in preparation for 4th grade, and life! The word list was compiled from Kindergarten-Grade 3 Fundations vocabulary and/or trick words.
The top 5 spellers from each class will compete in the grade level spelling bee. Should your child make it to the grade level spelling bee, invitations will be sent directly to you at a later date. There will be prizes for the top 3 grade-level spelling bee winners. The first place speller will win a one-on-one 3D printing design and printing session with Mrs. Eggett, our Digital Lead Teacher!
We encourage your child to study the words in preparation for the spelling bee but they are also words that kids should be spelling correctly on a consistent basis. If you would like to contribute any funds or prizes for the top spellers in the grade level or the classrooms please let your child’s teacher know.
Class spelling bees will be held on Friday, April 25. The grade-level spelling bee will be held the last week of school.
Annual Math Night and Chicken Dinner
End of Year Celebrations
Multiplication Movie Madness- Students have been practicing their multiplication facts to earn movie tickets, popcorn, soda, candy, and VIP seating for division mastery. This celebration will take place on May 4th. Help to provide these treats would be appreciated.
Homework Completion Celebration- Third graders have been set a homework challenge for the final quarter. The expectation has always been that they complete and turn in their homework packets on Friday mornings. By now, many students have developed positive work habits and we want to celebrate their responsible habits. Every third grader who completes and submits weekly homework assignments for the remainder of the year will be invited to a picnic lunch and extra recess on Friday, May 25th. That week will also be the last week that homework is assigned.
End of Year Celebration- The third-grade team would like a chance for all students to celebrate their hard work together. Instead of doing individual class parties we opt to have one, large grade-level celebration on the playground. More information will be shared about this celebration as it approaches. We will be reaching out for donations of snacks and drinks, as well as volunteers to run the food table, face-painting station, and music.
