News From John Tuck Elementary (December 2019)
Principal's Message
Dear John Tuck Community,
Where did November go? The month of November is often referred to as “No-School November” because of all of the days our students have off for conferences, Veteran’s Day and Thanksgiving Break. Nevertheless, we carry on and our students are making tremendous gains academically and socially. It was a pleasure to see so many of you and have a chance to visit with you during conference week and yes, the “Week of Surprises” was a blast...chicken suits, Duck gear and all! I am ecstatic that our school will once again get to bring in an artist in residence and a musician in residence to teach our students and teachers. This is a tremendous example of the awesome PTO and community we have supporting our John Tuck students.
Kudos to all of you for helping us ensure your child is in school everyday on time, for the entire day. As the flu and cold season is upon us we all need to be diligent about making sure our children get at least 9-10 hours of sleep each night, stay hydrated, and eat well. We often get questions about when to keep a child home if they are sick. Our standards are pretty straightforward, if a child has a temperature above 100 degrees, is throwing up or has symptoms of illness combined with diarrhea, they should stay home for the day.
Congratulations to Our Attendance Rock Stars from November: (We had 253 students with perfect attendance last month, but these individuals were the lucky ones randomly selected to receive an Attendance Rock Star trophy.

John Tuck Performances - As part of our commitment to educating the whole child and integrate the Arts into our school, we will continue the tradition of each grade level participating in a performance. On December 19th, our 3rd and 4th Grade will each perform Elfis and the Sleigh Riders. 3rd Grade will be at 5:30 p.m. and 4th grade will perform 6:30 p.m.
Stay tuned for more information about 1st and 2nd grade performances in March, and the 5th Grade Talent Show, in June.
Please contact us at 541-923-4800 with any questions. It is very important your child is at school each day so they can practice and be prepared.
Thanks for all you do to support your child and the greater John Tuck Community. We wish you all a wonderful Holiday Season and a Merry Christmas. #allinforallkids

Safe Touch Lessons Begin in December
Dear Parents/Guardians,
Per state guidelines, Redmond School District implements a sexual abuse prevention curriculum called Safe Touch. As we did last year, Safe Touch lessons will be taught to all students at John Tuck Elementary during scheduled guidance lessons.
The Safe Touch lessons teach children to recognize the difference between OK and NOT OK touches, how to say “No,” and who to go to for help. Students learn skills to trust their own feelings, to assess dangerous or uncomfortable situations and how to take steps that empower them to stay safe. Students are taught anatomically correct terms for private body parts. The approach is honest and non-frightening. All lessons have been evaluated by RSD Counselors and Administrators. The RSD Board of Directors has also approved the implementation of the curriculum. Please contact me if you would like more information about each lesson being taught or would like to review the teaching materials I will use during these lessons.
Every student at John Tuck will receive this important instruction. However, if you do not want your child to participate, you may opt out by signing and returning the bottom portion of this letter to the office, OR by emailing Mrs. Hamann at andrea.hamann@redmondschools.org.
We do respect parents’ right to choose how to teach their children about sexual abuse and how to protect their children from it. If you are interested in receiving more information please contact me at 541-923-4884 or

New 3-D Printed Tornado Charms Awarded to John Tuck Students
During the week before Winter Break, John Tuck staff are on the lookout for kids following directions and staying focused, and rewarding them with Tiny Tornado slips. At the end of the day, each teacher draws a few slips and awards a prize to those students.
Each tornado charm is created in our STEAM lab using 3D printers supplied by our amazing PTO!. Mr. Jaentsch creates the design in a CAD program on the computer that is designed in a 3D workspace program. From there, another program takes the design and "slices" it into many thin layers and creates a set of instructions known as a path fro the 3D printer to follow. The 3D printer then follows this set of instructions by starting with melting a type of plastic called filamen through a small nozzle that is very similar to a hot glue gun. Moving side to side and up and down, printing the design layer by layer until you have a final product.
Mr. Jaentsch invites anyone to visit the lab in Portable 19 to check out the printer at work, who says he almost always has something printing on one of the printers.
