Should Freshmen and Sophomores be allowed off campus at lunch? An editorial by Noah Wipprecht
During lunch Juniors and Seniors are allowed to go off campus, unlike freshmen and Sophomores. Even though it makes sense that freshmen aren’t allowed to go off campus because they don’t have cars it doesn’t make sense that Sophomores can’t be off-campus when some do have cars. Also even though Juniors and Seniors are all old enough to have cars not all do, which poses the question of why shouldn’t Freshman and Sophomores be allowed off-campus? It doesn’t seem fair that only half of the high school students are allowed off-campus, while half aren’t. What is the reasoning behind only letting Juniors and Seniors off-campus while not letting sophomores and freshmen? Some people reason that freshmen and Sophomores lack the responsibility and maturity to be let off-campus. This claim is very stereotypical and isn’t true for most. Also, this isn’t fair towards Freshmen and Sophomores who are mature and responsible. To add to that, not all Juniors and Seniors are mature and responsible. Also what damage could lower classmen do that upperclassmen haven’t already done. It doesn’t make any sense just because of their age Freshman and Sophomores aren’t allowed off-campus. Allowing underclassmen could also impact our school positively. If we allowed freshmen and Sophomores off campus it could decrease the massive amounts of people in the lunchroom. This could then help lower the lines to food and help the kids that stay at school get their food faster. Overall though if you have your driver’s license it doesn’t make any sense why you should not be allowed off-campus. If you’re responsible enough to get your driver’s license and drive to school you should also be responsible enough to be left off-campus. Even if you don’t have a car you should still be allowed off-campus if you have a ride. Instead of focusing on a student's age, our school should focus on the actual student and the level of responsibility in the students. Also allowing Freshmen to go off campus could teach them responsibilities needed in high school. Another reason we should allow Underclassmen off campus is because of our cafeteria options. Our Cafeteria doesn’t offer many diets that some students either prefer or need. Some may argue if this is the case students should just pack a lunch, but in most cases, students don’t have the time in the morning to do so. Some may also argue that letting underclassmen out would cause more traffic in the town. This is however not true when you take into account how many Sophomores have cars and how many will actually use them to go off-campus. Also, it would be better than the circumstances now where many underclassmen are crowded in our small cafeteria. Some people have nowhere to sit and sometimes either have to sit on the floor or outside. People also sometimes have to fight over places to sit. Some students have to rush to their seats before anyone else takes them. As you can see our school is struggling because of its policy of not letting underclassmen go off-campus. Overall letting underclassmen off-campus would more benefit our school, instead of harming it.
