Mott Elementary was fortunate to host three amazing events this week!


  • Grandparent's Day was highly enjoyable for all of our visitors. We saw so many smiles! Thanks to the efforts of staff, parents, and grandparents, we were able to easily accommodate 479 visitors for lunch!
  • Our first Book Fair of the year was the biggest and best yet! Thank you to Mrs. Shellenberger, our librarian, for organizing such a wonderful opportunity for our students and families.
  • Open House was another huge success. The traffic flow was fine, parents and students enjoyed the evening, and we had a great turnout! We heard such positive comments!

All of these events were successful due to the combined efforts of the entire Mott Owl Family - Parents, Staff and Students!

School Recognition

See the picture of Coach Dufour at the Mayor's Health and Fitness Awards. The awards ceremony took place today at Austin City Hall. Mrs. Vernagene Mott was able to join Coach Dufour to receive this recognition on behalf of Mott Elementary!

Destination Imagination Info Night hosted by PfISD

Zaxby's Night for Mott - Tuesday, September 17 - 5:00 - 9:00 p.m.

Enjoy a night of no cooking and no dishes! You can dine in the restaurant or pick up dinner in the drive through lane. No need to turn in a receipt. Mott receives a portion of the entire night's proceeds.

Tips for Picking Up Your Child Early for an Appointment

We truly appreciate your efforts in scheduling appointments after school hours. However, we understand that is not always possible. So, if you need to pick your child up early for an appointment, and your child will not return that day, it could take 10 to 15 minutes for your child to get to the office. Here is the reason why:


  1. Often, our teachers do not know ahead of time that your child will be leaving early. They have to gather homework, folders, etc. to put in the backpack. Your child has to pack these items, their water bottle, the book they are reading, etc. before they start walking to the office.
  2. Our school is 19,000 square feet. It takes a long time to walk from some parts of the building up to the office. Especially if your child is young and has short legs!
  3. If your child is in special areas, lunch, computer lab, recess, etc., they will have to go back to the classroom to get their backpack. There is no guarantee that the teacher will be in the room at that time due to meetings, copying, etc. Our classroom doors are always locked, for safety reasons. So, the office will have to put a call out on the radio to find someone with a key that can walk to the classroom to open the door, so that your child can get their backpack. This will take several minutes. You can avoid this added delay by knowing your child's schedule, and arrive before or after lunch, specials and recess. Schedule by Teacher
  4. Sometimes, teachers take their class for a whole group bathroom break. These breaks are not scheduled, and are based on class need due to that day's schedule. In this case, when the office calls the room and the teacher does not answer, we just have to wait a few minutes until the class returns to the room.

In other words, please allow plenty of time to pick up your child in order to make it to your appointment on time.

Questions and Answers from the PTO Meeting on Sep. 9

Q: When will the new parking lot construction begin?

A: The district has worked with the city to expedite the process. Construction is anticipated to begin this semester.

Q: What will happen when classrooms and areas in the school, such as the gym, are in violation of fire codes due to capacity?

A: The district has approved additional staff and space to ensure that will not happen. We have added portables and teachers to maintain a ratio of 22 or less students per classroom space. We are adding an additional special area teacher to reduce the number of students in the gym, as well as, in the music and art room. The additional special area teacher will be in the open room next to the art room. We work closely with the fire department to ensure that all daily school operations meet fire code.

Q: Where will students go during a tornado drill?

A: Our district safety directors have worked with us to find a place for every class. While we have a lot of windows that provide amazing natural light, we also have a lot of hallways and other spaces that provide shelter in the event of a tornado. Each room has a map of where to go!

Q: Teachers are short on textbooks. When will they arrive?

A: Additional textbooks needed to be ordered district wide. They are already in process to be delivered and will arrive soon.

Q: Will the bilingual program be impacted by the new school?

A: It is too early in the process to answer that question. There will be a rezoning process, a boundary committee, and an opportunity for community input, that will be involved in making that decision.

Please allow 24 hours during the work week for a response to a non-emergency question or request. If you call or send an email on a Friday, you should expect a response during business hours the following week.
