Together We Are Better

Movember= Mo-Gratitude

I know- Movember really stands for the No Shave Movement sported by men everywhere during the month of November, but in my mind, it also stands for Mo-Gratitude. As we move closer towards Thanksgiving, one naturally begins to reflect on all that we have in our lives that we are grateful for. With Veterans Day on Tuesday, I cannot help but think about how grateful I am for the men and women who have sacrificed their lives, their families, their own freedoms, for all of us. I am blessed to be a part of this country.

I am grateful for small, daily sacrifices that each of you make on behalf of your students- those small moments add up in big ways. I am grateful for the children who enter our doors every day, knowing that they are entering a place of warmth, love, and support. I am grateful for the child who responded to the news that he would get a free book at our Books N Bingo Night with a huge smile and a raised fist of jubilation. And so very thankful for all of the people in that child's life who have helped to created that excitement over books. I am grateful for this staff who, while they may be apprehensive about all of the new things happening in education, are willing to dip their toes in the water of innovation, because they want to do what is best for the children we serve. I am grateful for the way that you all support one another. That is truly a blessing. I am blessed to be a part of the Winskill family.

On a personal level, I am grateful for my family. For a husband who understands this passion that I have for reaching and supporting children and only rolls his eyes a little when I struggle to shut that off after the school day/week ends. I am grateful for three children who have taught me more in their short lifetimes than I have learned in any grad class about how to be a better person. They have taught me how to approach the children who enter my classroom and now my office in ways that support their learning with dignity, empathy, and respect. I am grateful for my Wisconsin family. I have two sets of in-laws and while they could not be more different from one another, they each love and care for me and our children in the most wonderful ways possible. I am always grateful for my own extended family, but even more so this month. My mother was recently diagnosed with cancer and while that has truly been a scary, scary thing to hear and go through with her, I am grateful for the doctors who caught her tumor early, for those same doctors and nurses who have been caring for her, and for the positive prognosis she has been given. I am grateful for my sister and my brother, who kept me informed every step of the way. I am especially grateful for my father, who loves my mother in the way that she truly deserves and has taken care of her every step of the way. Because of their example, I was taught that I deserve the same kind of relationship in my own marriage- and hopefully we are teaching our children that same lesson. How blessed I am to be a part of such a special family.

During this month, please take a few minutes for yourself and consider all that you are grateful for- and know that YOU are on my gratitude list.
