History :
In the early 1850s, John M. Studebaker was best known in El Dorado County for the wheelbarrows he made for the miners during the gold rush at his shop located in Placerville (“Old Hangtown”). His wheelbarrows were so good that he became known as “Wheelbarrow Johnny.”
For more information regarding this event, visit www.studebakerwheelbarrowraces.com
However, his next venture after the gold rush occurred when John Studebaker returned to South Bend, Indiana and started his buggy and wagon company. Later, he made horseless carriages and ultimately started the Studebaker Corporation in 1852.
The Studebaker’s 100th Anniversary was in 1952, just four years before Placerville Kiwanis was chartered. Kiwanis International has also been “Improving Our World, One Child and One Community at a Time” for more than a century.
For the past few years, members of the Studebaker Drivers’ Club have displayed their classic Studebaker autos and pickup trucks at the John M. Studebaker Wheelbarrow Races.
The Studebaker Corporation built vehicles until 1966. Today, there are nearly 12,000 members of the Studebaker Drivers’ Club in many countries all around the world, including Europe, South America, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Canada and the United States. There are four chapters of the club in Northern and Central California and Northern Nevada.
Placerville Kiwanis is proud to be part of the local Studebaker heritage that began during the gold rush and pleased that the Studebaker Drivers’ Club is sharing the history of its vehicles with the citizens of El Dorado County.

Chronic absenteeism is defined as missing 10% or more of the school year. Research shows that chronic absenteeism has a significant detrimental effect on student achievement. Any time your student is absent, we request that you call or email our office to clear the absence. While there may be times when your student is absent for an “unexcused” reason, we would hope that you would still let us know why your student is missing school. Our office logs attendance notes so teachers can reference why students are absent. Our school staff aims to maintain clear communication with parents so that our students can have optimal success in the classroom.
Feel free to reach out to me with any questions or concerns and please continue to call or email our office to clear any absences! 😊
