ABSENT NOTES- DON'T FORGET
The State of Pennsylvania is now monitoring student attendance closely.
As a result of this governance, all absences are documented as unlawful until a note of excuse is received. Additionally, 6 days of unlawful absences now result in a truant case. Once a student is marked a truancy case, the result can be truancy court.
Parents can help prevent against this occurrence by sending in all excuse notes within three days of any absence. The teachers will be sending all notes to the office the morning they are received. Thank you in advance for your help in minimizing any attendance-related challenges.
Quest Teacher, Mr. Fell and Art Teacher, Mrs. Thomas, have worked diligently to create Pine Run’s very first MAKERSPACE!
Makerspaces are creative spaces designed to engage learners in hands-on activities that teach twenty-first-century skills. The emphasis in makerspaces is placed upon educating students in STEAM subjects (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics), as well as digital and information literacy.

Pine Run's Parent-Student Book Club!
The Pine Run Book Club met on January 24 for another thought-provoking meeting. Included were fifteen students and their parents, ranging in grades from 4th to 6th. Mrs. Strader reports that they read and discussed “When You Reach Me” by Rebecca Stead. This is a story of a young girl who starts receiving letters from a stranger, who just happens to be from the future! One dad stated, “This is the best book we’ve read yet! I had so many in-depth conversations with my daughter ranging from science, time/travel, and how consequences of your actions have lasting effects.”
We're All WONDERS!
After seeing the movie WONDER, Mrs. Merson's class is taking the Kindness Secret Mission very seriously. On their own, they decided to write a positive note for each student and adult in the classroom, so that everyone could feel loved when they walked into school one Monday.
They are spreading the LOVE!
The WONDERS of Collaboration
The fourth grade students in Mrs. Romano/Fisher’s class and the fifth graders in Mrs. Martin’s class are each piloting a new math program entitled, Math In Focus. While they are learning new math concepts, they are also working across grade levels to collaborate and grow together.
Below are fourth and fifth graders working and learning side-by-side on Bar Modeling. The fifth graders acted as "experts", as they demonstrated, guided, encouraged, and helped the 4th graders learn this important skill!
The Scary Truth About What's Hurting Our Kids
Article by Becky Mansfield (Your Modern Family)
As a mom and as and educator, I read an article by Becky Mansfield that quickly got my attention. Becky cited CNN who recently interviewed Dr. Jean Twenge. Dr. Twenge started doing research 25 years ago on Generational Differences. In 2011-2012 Dr. Twenge saw something startling.... and scary. This was the year when those having iPhones went over the 50% mark.
Dr. Twenge goes on to cite a correlational relationship between depression and technology. She states that “Today’s children are being deprived of the fundamentals of a healthy childhood":
- Emotionally available parents
- Clearly defined limits and guidance
- Responsibilities
- Balanced nutrition and adequate sleep
- Movement and outdoors
- Creative play, social interaction, opportunities for unstructured times and boredom
Instead, children are being served with:
- Digitally distracted parents
- Indulgent parents who let kids “Rule the world”
- Sense of entitlement rather than responsibility
- Inadequate sleep and unbalanced nutrition
- Sedentary indoor lifestyle
- Endless stimulation, technological babysitters, instant gratification, and absence of dull moments
Mrs. Mansfield goes on to define how technology can interrupt, disrupt, and invade children's lives in many different ways. As adults, we can hopefully turn this tide.
