ACHIEVE Foundation Grant Awardees at Montrose
This fall, Achieve is funding over $17,000 worth of grants tied to social and emotional learning (SEL), as needs exacerbated by the pandemic remain high.
Look out for a few Montrose Messenger Newsletters dedicated to Social and Emotional Learning, prepared by Ms. Betsy and Ms. Kelly. In a short while, many Montrose students will be able to implement several mindfulness techniques - and so will you!
If your child is not permitted to participate in the parade, please let their classroom teacher know.
Halloween Parade
COSTUMES:
Costumes are not required. If your child chooses to have one, they should bring costumes, not wear them to school. Face paint/makeup can be applied before coming to school. No simulated “weapons” are allowed. This includes swords, sabers, etc. Children must be able to see clearly, so only masks that allow unobstructed vision will be allowed. Costumes that drag on the ground will not be permitted. In order to avoid unnecessary upset for the students, please be sure to try on costumes at home a few days before 10/31.
PARADE ROUTE:
We will exit the main door of the building (using the ramp), make a right towards Clark Street, walk on Clark Street on the sidewalk across the front of the school, make a right into the secondary parking lot, up the stairs and onto the path to Meeker. We will walk along the sidewalk on Meeker, back into the yard (using the gate farthest from the playground) and back up the ramp into the building. Families who desire to stop by will be able to see the parade from any spot along this route.
STUDENT SAFETY:
We ask that you keep all sidewalks and walking paths clear for the duration of the parade.
Family members may not take students from their lines or block our walking route. All students will re-enter the building after the parade for a regular 2:30 dismissal. If you anticipate early dismissal, please pick your child up before 1:00. Please note that students dismissed prior to 1:00 will not participate in the parade.
MORE INFORMATION
Fun, seasonal activities will be planned for any students not participating in or watching the parade.
We understand that this event is exciting and special to many. It may also be an overwhelming sensory experience for some. With that, we appreciate your continued support in ensuring that we remain focused on students and their safety & well-being.
If there is inclement weather, the parade will be canceled. All families will be notified of cancellation via SchoolMessenger email or voice blast by 10:30 am.

Equity, Inclusion and Anti-Racist Costume Considerations:
As you are preparing your children with costumes, please be mindful that costumes should not:
- Mock, mimic, or caricaturize historically/currently oppressed people/groups or appropriate their cultures. This includes the appropriation/mockery of hair such as the use of Afro wigs or Afro-style clown wigs.
- Include painting large sections of the face black, brown, or a similar color (due to the connection with blackface) or painting the face for the purpose of matching skin color of a specific person or people.
- Mock, mimic or appropriate religions or religious beliefs.
- Use sacred objects/clothing of others’ religions/cultures. (wearing feathers in an attempt to represent indigenous peoples, for example)
NOTE: It's perfectly fine to dress up like a specific person from a different race or ethnicity -- but the key is to dress like the person, not like racial, religious, or ethnic stereotypes of their community or culture.
Hello Montrose Families,
I hope everyone is enjoying this fabulous Fall weather!
For those of you who are questioning whether to send your child to school, I am attaching the
Guidelines: Sending your Healthy Children to School Nursing Guidance
I am running very low on a couple clothing items. Please do not go out and buy. However, if anyone has clothing that no longer fits and is in good condition, I could use:
- Gender neutral size 3T, 4T and 5T pants
- Gender neutral size 4T and 5T tops
- underpants, any toddler size
Also, for those of you who are not familiar with the current Covid Guidance
Here is the guidance from the 2022-23 SY SOMSD Return to School Guidebook on the first tab website: https://www.somsd.k12.nj.us/
Finally, I would like to remind all families that the flu shot is due before 12/22/23. Please do not wait until the last minute as many healthcare providers run out. If I do not receive the proof of the vaccine before the winter break your child will be unable to return to school on 1/3/23. I do not check my mail over the holiday break.
I hope you all enjoy the upcoming Fall Break!
Stay healthy,
Nurse Steffi
