Learner Profile:
May’s learner profile trait is knowledgeable. We will be looking for students who explore ideas and issues that have local and global significance. In doing so, they acquire in-depth knowledge and develop understanding across a broad and balanced range of disciples.
Language Workshop:
In Language Workshop, we have started a new unit on inquiry. The first book that we have read is The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind. The students really loved this book! The next story that we will be reading is Papa’s Mechanical Fish.
The students continue to write to the interesting prompts that the School District of Waukesha has provided for us as literacy teachers. We have seen a lot of growth in their work. We have just one unit left after this one - Reflection.
Reading Workshop:
In Reader’s Workshop, the students have been working a lot with characters, recounting stories that they have read or we have read as a class. The students have also been working on their stamina in reading so that they will be able to do their best job on their MAP testing that they will be taking next week. Thanks for all the great reading at home - it truly makes a difference in your child’s life as a reader!
Writing Workshop:
Our writing unit will go hand and hand with our science unit on weather. Lessons will focus on information writing. Students will research a weather hazard and write a nonfiction book on the topic.
Math:
In math, we have been studying area and perimeter. Students have been able to make connections to some real world examples to help them understand each one and remember their differences.
Area: the space inside of a shape, Area = length x width
Examples: tiling or carpeting the floor
square footage in a floor plan
space in a pool, deck, or patio
painting walls
Perimeter: the distance around the outside of a shape, Perimeter = side + side + side + side
Examples: putting up a fence around a yard or garden
distance around a track
picture, window, or door frames

Science:
We will be dong a weather unit this last month of school. Students will be learning about weather vs. climate, tracking and analyzing temperature and precipitation, climatic regions, and weather hazards. Each student will be choosing a weather hazard to research and report on.
Second Step:
Our Second Step lesson this week focused on “Jumping to Conclusions”. Once again, students practiced using their calming down strategies so that they can think more clearly in situations instead of jumping to conclusions.
MAP Testing:
Our final MAP testing of the year will take place the following days this month:
ELA: Wednesday, May 9 and Thursday, May 10 (9:00-9:45)
Math: Tuesday, May 15 and Wednesday, May 16 (9:00-9:45)
If you know that your child will be gone for any of that time, please let your child’s teacher know ASAP. If possible, please try not to schedule appointments on those mornings.
Please make sure your son or daughter has a healthy breakfast and comes to school well rested. Ipads will need to be charged to 100%. We are hoping to see a lot of growth from our 3rd graders!
Field Trip:
More information will be sent home soon for those of you who volunteered to join us our field trip to the Fox River/Environmental Ed. Building.
