Yadislay Lopez Ursua, Joscelyn Leon Cardenas and Diego Paucar Deleg - Sylvia Mendez
Sylvia Mendez is an American civil rights activist of Mexican and Puerto Rican Heritage. At the age of eight, she played an instrumental role in the Mendez vs. Westminster case, the landmark desegregation case of 1946. The case successfully ended lawful segregation in California and paved the way for integration and the American Civil Rights Movement.
Mendez grew up during a time when most southern and southwestern schools were segregated. In the case of California, Hispanics were not allowed to attend schools that were designated for "Whites" only and were sent to the so-called "Mexican schools." Mendez was denied enrollment to a "Whites" only school, an event which prompted her parents to take action and together organized various sectors of the Hispanic community who filed a lawsuit in the local federal court. The success of their action, of which Sylvia was the principal catalyst, would eventually bring to an end the era of segregated education. On January 19, 1948, Mendez and her siblings were finally allowed to attend the 17th Street Elementary school, thus becoming one of the first Hispanics to attend an all-white school in California.
She was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the United States' highest civilian honor, on February 15, 2011 by President Barack Obama.
The three high schoolers chose Mendez because she led them to believe they have the right to a good education and the freedom to choose their school. With her fight to go to a "White School" she worked towards making everyone feel equal in education no matter their race. Another reason they chose Mendez is they agree that language should not determine what school people attend and that everyone deserves equal opportunity. She had the courage to stand up to the government at such a young age, which makes them feel empowered to fight for what they believe in.
"Even though we sometimes dislike school, we don't have to face anything like what Sylvia went through being the first Hispanic in an all-white school. She fought for that opportunity that we sometimes take for granted, and need to realize that is would not be an option if it were not for her." - Ursua, Cardenas and Deleg
