College Applications
College Application Week: Every November!
First things first, make sure to check for college application deadlines!!
- Example: Oregon State University's Early Notification deadline is November 1st!
- Example: University of Oregon Early Action application deadline is November 1st!
- Typically, the earlier you apply, the sooner you will be admitted and the more financial aid you will be eligible to receive.
- SOME SCHOLARSHIPS ARE DEPENDENT ON WHEN YOU COMPLETE YOUR COLLEGE APPLICATION. Example: the University of Oregon Stamps Scholarship deadline is November 1st!
Final application deadlines for four-year colleges typically occur in the months of February and March. IMPORTANT: always check the website of your college of choice for application deadlines since they can vary greatly from college to college!
Can't find the application deadline online?? Call or e-mail the admissions office of your college of choice and ask!
COMMUNITY COLLEGES:
- Most community college applications are free (you may find a couple that charge an application fee--if you cannot afford this, remember to ask for a fee waiver or deferment)
- You can typically apply to community colleges much later in the school year, with the applications often being open up until right before your first term of college would begin in the fall.
- You may find that some community college applications are not open for you to apply early in your senior year. If the application for admission to the Fall 2018 term is not open yet when you look at your community college of choice, try back later or contact admissions to apply.
College Applications: Step-by-Step
Step 1: Narrow down your college choices
- Use CIS to explore colleges and careers
- Search college websites for programs and majors to make sure your college of choice offers what you would like to study (tip: if you have no idea what you would like to study, choose a college that offers a few programs or majors that sound interesting to you--you can settle on a specific major later)
- Check admissions criteria (minimum GPA, SAT or ACT score requirements, high school class requirements, etc) and application deadlines
- Make a list of colleges you would like to apply to
Step 2: Locate and review the college application online
- Go to the website of your college of choice and search for the online application. You would typically find this under "Admissions" or "Apply Now"
- Thoroughly read the application and gather the materials you will need to complete the application
- Make a note of application fees (if applicable)
Step 3: Fill out and submit the application
- Make sure to read and follow all directions carefully
- Make sure to send your transcripts and test scores (if applicable)
- Make sure to add all colleges you applied to to your FAFSA (if you have not already done so)--this is VERY IMPORTANT so that you receive financial aid information from your college in a timely manner
Step 4: Follow Up
- Follow up with the college by checking your e-mail and postal mail for further directions
But I can't afford the application fee...
You should contact the admissions office of your college of choice to ask about fee waivers.
Some colleges (such as Oregon Tech) will host events where they waive application fees for ALL students. Ask your college of choice if this is an option for you.
How do I sent my SAT or ACT test scores?
To send scores, you must log in to your CollegeBoard (SAT) or your ACT account. This is the same account and website that you used to register for the test.
When you register to take the test, you may enter colleges and your scores will be sent to those colleges automatically.
If you forgot to enter colleges when you registered or you need to add a college, you will need to log back into your account and send scores. There is a fee to send test scores if you do not list your college of choice when you register for the SAT or ACT.
How do I send my high school transcript to a college?
If you have an option to request that your transcript be submitted electronically and need an e-mail to enter, please enter Mrs. Haney's e-mail address: haneyj@kcsd.k12.or.us.
If you need your transcript mailed, please see Mrs. Haney in the Counseling office.
The colleges that you apply to will let you know if and when you will need to send these transcripts.
What about my college transcripts?
You will need to contact the college or colleges you earned credit from to request that your college transcript be sent to another college. You may be charged a fee for this.
The colleges that you apply to will let you know if and when you will need to send these transcripts.
