Dear Mental Health Leads,
As you know Deborah Kaiser has now left her role of Mental Health and Wellbeing Adviser and we are currently recruiting for her replacement. Interviews are being held the first week of February so we hope to have someone in post in the coming months.
I will let you know as soon as we have recruited and have a start date. In the meantime the Mental Health and PSHE bulletin will continue to be updated and shared monthly with details of the February Mental Health Lead network, resources and available training.

Children’s Mental Health Week 5th – 11th February 2024 ‘My Voice Matters’
Children’s Mental Health week is a mental health awareness week that empowers, equips and gives a voice to all children and young people in the UK. This year’s theme, ‘My Voice Matters’, is about empowering children and young people by providing them with the tools they need to express themselves.
Place2Be has extensive resources for schools including assembly guides, worksheets and top tips, as well as family and parent/carer resources that can be shared with families to use at home.

New Emotional Wellbeing Website for Young People and Families
A new NHS website, packed with emotional wellbeing and mental health information and resources, has been launched to help young people and families, as well as professionals working with them, to navigate support options.
NCL Waiting Room was produced with the help and input of young people, families and professionals. It aims to be a 'one-stop shop' for information on specialist mental health services, community groups, emotional wellbeing and self-care resources.
It allows young people and their parents or carers to search for, filter and share resources based on their needs and preferences.
NCL Waiting Room will continue to grow and develop, so watch this space for more details. You can visit the website here and try out the Support Hub resource navigation feature here.

Kooth resources
Kooth offers free, safe and anonymous online wellbeing and mental health support for children and young people aged 11 to 18. See below new resources for 2024.
- Kooth winter activity sheets: Take a look at our latest *NEW* activity sheets for young people to explore their emotions, relationship skills, and coping techniques. As we begin the new term, why not encourage young people to reflect on their goals with the New Year’s resolution box?
- Support guides for young people: Share our 6 support guides for young people, which offer helpful advice and information on social anxiety, eating difficulties, self-injury, suicidal thoughts, and safety plans, in addition to a young person's experience on Kooth.

Staff Training Opportunities
Complete online Senior mental health lead training this February
The Tavistock and Portman NHS Foundation Trust are inviting schools to join the next cohort of their online Senior mental health lead training which begins on 19 February 2024. Eligible state-funded schools and colleges can receive funding from the Department of Education (DfE) – meaning your training costs will be covered.
Currently ranked within the top three of beginner courses on the DfE course selector tool, the DfE quality-assured training has been recently refreshed and restructured to introduce the latest best practice. You’ll learn over 12-weeks through interactive units, live group seminars and a peer discussion forum – giving you the tools to implement a whole-school approach to mental health in your setting. You’ll receive continued support throughout the learning process, with access to course content for a year and drop-in consultancy sessions. These informal sessions will provide you with additional coaching so that you can reflect on setting-specific challenges and meet targets within your personalised school wellbeing plan.
You’ll learn from the only NHS Trust to be registered as a Higher Education Provider by The Office for Students and benefit from their experience of being at the forefront of mental health and wellbeing for over 100 years.
Emotional Literacy Support Assistants Initiative
Camden Educational Psychology Service (EPS) are delighted to be running the ELSA initiative in 2023-2024 for the ninth year. ELSAs are Emotional Literacy Support Assistants working in primary, secondary and specialist provision. They are Teaching Assistants/ Learning Support Assistants/Mental health Leads who have received specific training and on-going supervision from EPs. Their role is to support children and young people in school to understand and regulate their own emotions, support friendship challenges, build self-esteem and resilience, and provide support during life challenges.
ELSAs will receive six days of training from the EPS, which will be delivered via a hybrid model of 8 virtual half-day sessions (9:30am-12.30pm) and 2 full day face-to-face.

Senior Mental Health Leads Training - Second Grant Available!
*NEW* Opportunity to claim a second grant if the trained lead has left
- We are pleased to announce that schools and colleges that have already claimed a DfE grant are now eligible for a second grant if their trained senior mental health lead has left the post. This is in recognition that the previous lead may not have had the opportunity to implement their learning and embed a whole school/college approach (WSCA) to mental health and wellbeing.
- The application process remains the same as the first-time round with one additional step: when completing the online form, the applicant needs to tick the declaration to confirm the previously trained senior mental health lead at the setting has now moved on from the role.
- The attached flyer has been updated to reflect this change to the DfE grant offer.

Welcome to the February PSHE bulletin. This month sees a host of awareness days including ‘Children’s Mental Health Week,’ ‘LGBT+ History Month,’ ‘Safer Internet Day’ and ‘The International Day of Zero Tolerance to FGM. We have included a wide range of resources that will help you prepare for these via assemblies or PSHE lessons.
Please do not forget to express your views and that of your school (student voice) on the DFE Consultation Guidance on Gender Questioning Children. The consultation closes on 12th March 2024.
We will be discussing the Consultation Guidance at the PSHE Network meetings for Primary and Secondary Leads this month. Both sessions are online so, we hope that you can attend. There will be a range of guest speakers who will discuss how they can support your PSHE curriculum, including training opportunities.

LGBT History Month 1-29th February
LGBT+ History Month is a fantastic opportunity to celebrate LGBTQ+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer/questioning and other sexual identities) people and their achievements through history and raise awareness of ongoing struggles and discrimination.
This year’s theme is Medicine - #UnderTheScope, celebrating LGBTQ+ people's contribution to medicine and healthcare through history and today.
Consultation Guidance on Gender Questioning Children
The DFE have released guidance for consultation on Gender Questioning Children for Schools and Colleges. The consultation closes on 12th March 2024.
The consultation is seeking views on the content of the guidance and whether it will help to support schools, colleges, and other interested parties to make lawful decisions in relation to children/young people who are questioning their gender. Just Like Us, the LGBT+ young people’s charity, has released new free assembly resources.
The primary school’s assembly resource for KS1 and KS2 explores the importance of learning about LGBT+ history, celebrating our differences, and remembering LGBT+ figures in history who have shown courage, resilience, and care for others.
The secondary school assembly resource highlights historical injustices faced by LGBT+ people and celebrates LGBT+ figures who have pushed for progress.

Into Film
Into Film, a charity that champions film in education, has 2 LGBT+ History Month assembly resources you can download for free (you will need to create a free account to access the resources).
“Ending Gender-Based Violence Training” free CPD accredited training from Tender 27th February
Tender are delivering free CPD training with MOPAC as part of the Mayor’s Office’s £1 million pledge to support London’s educators to address GBV (Gender based Violence).
The toolkit is a free resource to support schools in addressing issues such as Andrew Tate, misogyny, and sexual harassments, with activities and exercises which teachers can use to facilitate important conversations with students.
Rose Cleary (Tender Delivery Lead) will be attending the Primary and Secondary PSHE network meetings to discuss the programme in more detail and answer your questions.
To support the use of the toolkit in schools, Tender are offering free, CPD accredited and online training to increase awareness of GBV and boast confidence in utilising the toolkits information and activities. The sessions for Primary schools will be launched in Spring 2024.

International Day of Zero Tolerance to FGM; 6th February 2024
The International Day of Zero Tolerance to FGM aims to raise the awareness of the practice and work towards elimination of female gentile mutilation (FGM). This practice can be carried out on girls and women at any age.
It is important that children and young people learn about FGM to help themselves or others who may be directly at risk, and at immediate or future risk and also for young people who have experienced FGM which they may or may not have any recollection of.
The PSHE Association offer lesson resource pack for KS2 and KS3 which also contain information and guidance for teachers and support on teaching FGM. What schools need to know about FGM (pshe-association.org.uk)
In primary, it is advisable to teach the NSPC PANTS lesson about keeping bodies safe before teaching about FGM.

Safer Internet Day: Tuesday, 6 February
Safer Internet Day takes place on Tuesday, 6 February and is a chance to focus on the online safety and wellbeing of children and young people. This year’s theme is Inspiring Change.
UK Safer Internet Centre
The UK Safer Internet Centre has created free online safety resources to support teachers with teaching about online safety. The resources are for primary, secondary and sixth forms. Resources include lesson plans, activities, and assemblies for safer internet day.

Think U Know - CEOP Online Safety
The National Crime Agency's CEOP Education team aim to help protect children and young people from online child sexual abuse. This is done through their education programme, which provides training, resources and information to professionals working with children, young people and their families.

BBC Teach
BBC Teach have live lesson and resources for KS2 students. Topics covered are self-image and identity, privacy, and security, and much more. All resources have a resource contain a document wallet with discussion points and activity ideas.
Secondary resources cover topics on, online grooming, your body your image, digital literacy, and lots more, again all resources have a document wallet with discussion points and activities.

NSPC Learning - Online Safety Policy resource
NSPCC Learning have provided online safety policy statements to help schools produce their own documents. The documents set out how children should use the internet safety within your school.
Children's Mental Health Week; 5th -11th February
Children's Mental Health Week takes place from 5 -11 February and was launched to give voices to all children and young people in the UK.
The theme for 2024 is ‘My Voice Matters’.
Place2BE have a variety of free resources which encourages students to explore their mental health. Resources are for primary and secondary and KS5 students and include assemblies, PowerPoints, worksheets, top tips and much more. You can download resources using the link below.

BBC Teach have a wide range of resources for primary and secondary schools to support Children's Mental Health Week.
For secondary schools there are a series of animated short films exploring the experiences of teenagers dealing with mental health issues including eating disorders, anxiety, addiction, and depression. These films are suitable for teaching PSHE at KS3and KS4.
For primary there are engaging and explore our primary collection including an animated series to explore mental health issues from the perspective of young people. Film themes are 'mood boost', 'When I Worry About Things, and much more.

Leed Becket University: How to tackle student anxiety
Educational psychology experts at the Carnegie Centre of Excellence for Mental Health in Schools have developed a guide for teachers to address student anxiety.
The guidance explores how to identify anxiety and give your students coping techniques – with action plans for three specific areas:
- Low level anxiety
- Social anxiety around friendship groups
- Emotionally Based School Avoidance

The 'Supporting Schools and LGBT Young People' group have recently developed a new resource document 'Resources and Services for Camden Schools Supporting LGBT+ Children & Young People' which offers information, teaching resources and agencies for those in Camden schools who work with and support LGBT+ Children & Young People. Winter Wellness Coffee Mornings for Parents & Carers
Join us for a series of coffee mornings where we’ll be discussing how to stay healthy during the cold season. Our main points of discussion will include:
· Protecting your health in cold weather
· Cost of living support during winter in Camden
· Immunisation information
A great way for parents to learn about staying healthy during the winter season.
Opportunity to learn about the different types of cost-of-living support available in Camden, such as saving energy, reducing energy bills, and accessing food.
Additionally, we’ll be discussing the importance of immunisation and the different types of immunisations available.

Bullying or Banter? -The Anti-Bullying Alliance
The Anti-Bullying Alliance has published research into banter and bullying in schools in the UK. A survey of 900 teachers, co-created with Nottingham Trent University, found: 26% think banter is a serious problem within their schools. Research with 65,000 pupils in England, carried out with Goldsmiths, University of London, found 23% of children said they were frequently bullied.

National Schools Partnership: PSHE education lessons in the Sure Breaking Limits Programme
Developed by the National Schools Partnership, these free PE & PSHE education resources for key stage 2 are designed to give young people the confidence to move by making it fun, inclusive, and accessible for all, regardless of gender, race, or ability. The PSHE education component of the Breaking Limits programme will help pupils to understand how regular exercise benefits both physical and mental health and explore the importance of developing positive relationships and setting goals to support their own and others’ wellbeing.

PSHE Association: Financial Education
The PSHE Association have a whole school curriculum for KS3 -KS5. Lessons are backed by FT journalism, and the Financial Times Financial Literacy and Inclusion Campaign (FLIC) who support students to build the skills needed to embark on a healthy financial life.
There are free lessons, however membership is needed to access the whole curriculum which includes the full curriculum of toolkit, assemblies, videos, activities lesson plans etc. Examples of the topics covered are Cryptocurrency, Online gaming, Credit cards, mortgages and borrowing.

Free Period products for schools
The DfE have a free period product scheme for this academic year it began from 18th September up until 2024. The scheme is being run via phs (supplier) and is available for state funded schools from primary to secondary and Colleges up to age 19.
There is a wide range of products that schools can order.

· period pants in a variety of sizes

· tights
Schools must apply directly to phs who will stock and deliver period products to schools.
There is also guidance by DfE to schools on promoting the scheme to students and parents.

FAMILIES FOR LIFE PROGRAMME FOR EARLY YEARS AND PRIMARY SETTINGS
Join us in supporting our family session, a 4-week program that covers various healthy eating topics and sensory food education.
Designed for early years and primary school children and families, this interactive sessions will provide essential insights into promoting healthy eating, managing sweet cravings, tackling fussy eating and encouraging trying new foods.
This engaging program includes active games and an opportunity for families to make a healthy snack with their kids.

Ofsted Inspections - PSHE and statutory RSE
The PSHE Association are helping schools understand what Ofsted inspection means in practice by highlighting case studies from PSHE Leads and teachers whose schools have been through inspection. There are useful Questions asked by Ofsted and tips on how schools can develop and improve their PSHE Curriculum.

Update from Brook Camden & Islington
Brook is the UK’s leading sexual health charity. They are commissioned to provide free services to schools and colleges in Camden and Islington to support young people’s wellbeing and the professional development of staff.
They offer RSE sessions on a variety of topics including: Consent, Contraception, STIs, Puberty, Sex and the Law, Youth Produced Sexual Imagery (Sexting), Mental Health Awareness, Online Safety, Online Misogyny and LGBT+ Identities.
They offer targeted education through our 1:1 My Life programme, an early-intervention service that supports young people with skills, goal-setting and emotional resilience. My Life is a six-week programme that can be offered in-house.
Finally, they provide in-house teacher training on Creating a Safe Learning Environment and Managing Difficult Questions and Sensitive Issues in RSE, as well as other bespoke RSE topics.

Belonging and community: addressing discrimination and extremism
The PSHE Association have updated the lesson packs about ‘Inclusion, belonging & addressing extremism’ lesson for key stage 2 and key stage 4, and added brand new lessons for key stages 1 and 3. These lessons explore belonging, the impacts of stereotypes, and the features and value of respectful and inclusive communities, while helping children and young people to develop their understanding of discrimination and extremism.
Act for Youth: RUN HIDE TELL key stage 3-4 lesson pack.
Help young people protect themselves and keep safe in the event of a knife or gun attack with the newly updated Act for Youth: RUN HIDE TELL key stage 3-4 lesson pack. While the chances of being caught up in an attack are rare, these free lessons provide vital guidance which can be applied to many places and situations.
The PSHE Association and the National Counter Terrorism Security Office (NaCTSO) have worked together to develop these lessons as part of the Action Counters Terrorism (ACT) for YOUTH campaign.
The two lessons — one for KS3 and another for KS4 — cover:
- The three steps of RUN HIDE TELL and when it would be appropriate to use them
- The importance of not using a mobile phone to take photos or film in the event of a knife or gun attack
Gangs and Managing risks KS3-4 PSHE Association and Medway Public Health -
PSHE education cannot solely address all of the many reasons a young person may join a gang, but it can equip our children and young people with the knowledge and skills they need to make safe and healthy choices, and a safe place to explore risk and consequences. Medway Public Health and the PSHE Association have developed a resource pack of 3 engaging lesson plans and supporting activities.

Exploring Cybercrime for Pupils with SEND
Young people with SEND may be at higher risk of manipulation, coercion and exploitation online, and could be persuaded to carry out activities without fully understanding their consequences.
Designed for use with students aged 12-16 in special or mainstream education settings who have moderate learning difficulties, additional learning needs and/or autism, these fully-accessible lessons will help raise awareness of the risks associated with cybercrime, including the reasons why young people may engage in criminal activity online and its impact on both individuals and the wider community.
- Accompanying teacher guidance with 2 lesson plans for pupils aged 12-16. Each lesson plan provides four main activities and are based on the four progression stages outlined in the PSHE Association's Planning Framework for pupils with SEND.

Life Support Productions for SEND Pupils Primary & Secondary
Life Support Productions offer a range of relationship and sex education resources; You, Your Body, Growing Up, Relationships and Sex.
They are comprehensive resources for children and young people with learning disabilties and additional educational needs. Each of the resources provides essential information in a video format including consent, body changes, relationships, sex education, contraception, personal health.
Lesson plans can be viewed online for free, but the video resources need to be bought to be viewed.
Vaping - KS3 PSHE Association
A year 9 lesson exploring the consequences of vaping and challenging the influences that might encourage young people to vape.
This lesson will help students:
- understand the impact of influences, influencers and marketing on vaping-related choices and behaviours.
- explain the consequences of vaping, including the environmental cost of e-cigarettes.
- analyse ways to challenge influences and misconceptions about vaping.
Vaping - Votes for Schools
Vaping is about to be added to Sex and Health Education (RSHE) lessons, The Anti-bullying alliance have provided free lessons to help primary and secondary schools talk about it in the classroom: The resources are designed to facilitate classroom discussions, raise awareness, and empower students to make informed decisions about their health and well-being.

Camden Schools LGBTQ+ Reading Group
A group for professionals working in primary and secondary Camden schools who want to develop their understanding of LGBT+ topics and share good practice on the matter.
At each session we will read and discuss a different academic article / book chapter. We will also think about how this applies to our work.
WHEN? Meeting half-termly Tuesday 16.30-17.45 at Acland Burghley School – tea and biscuits provided!
