A Message from Mr. Dorken
Our daily experiences with Lyon students in Hybrid continue to be so positive! Children have acclimated to the routines of the in-person portion of their days, they are enthusiastically engaged in learning activities with their teachers and classmates, and they have appeared, overwhelmingly, very happy to be at school each day. We are grateful for all of these developments, and we continue to appreciate your cooperation and support to make all of this possible.
The daily safety measures that are so critical to our continuing to provide a healthy school environment rely on EVERYONE’S cooperation. Please remember that the steps we ask of each family (e.g., daily health self-certifications for every student, mask wearing, informing school of illness/symptoms, informing school of travel out of state) are both protections for your loved ones and for your neighbors. It takes the commitment of our entire community to successfully navigate the challenges that this pandemic has presented, and thus far, we are doing a fantastic job! Please stay committed, every day, to these cooperative efforts, and we will continue to enjoy a healthy school environment.
To that end, we remind you of the following:
- Please continue to complete the self-certification, every day, for students before they come to school. Ideally, these are completed daily by 8am (but no later than 8:30AM). Students for whom the self-certification has not been completed are not able to enter the building and proceed to their homeroom. See the District 34 Health & Safety Protocols for more details.
- If you have a student bus card and have not attached it to their backpack, please do so. If you change backpacks, please move the card to the new backpack. All students, even those who do not ride the bus, have been issued a card. This is the most efficient way to scan students into the building each day (confirming that the self-certification has been completed at home). While we have a backup system for scanning in students without a card, their transition to their homeroom is much quicker with the card attached to their backpack. Thank you!
On another subject related to community cooperation, we are once again humbled and appreciative of the generosity the Lyon/Pleasant Ridge cluster has shown toward our Holiday Helper program. We thank you for your kindness and willingness to help those in need. It is heartwarming to see the results of this program and to be a part of such a caring community.
Thank you for frequently sharing your kind words, feedback and support - it is all greatly appreciated! Take care and stay well.
A Message from Mr. Friedman
Pleasant Ridge Families,
Enjoying Halloween last week with our students and staff was one of my favorite moments this year. We all know the obstacles and challenges we’ve all faced this year so it was fun to let our hair down and have some fun together. I’m thankful for our families and teachers that pulled together to make this a memorable day at PR. Even though I couldn’t see it behind their masks, it was hard for kids and teachers to hide their smiles. It’s moments like these that reaffirm all the hard work we’ve put in this year to make in person learning experiences possible. It’s all very worth it!
Over the last few months I’ve had the opportunity to observe instruction both in person and over Zoom. And while we would all agree that in person instruction is more desirable, I’m amazed at how resilient both our students and teachers are in using Zoom. I’ve seen a level of creativity and problem solving emerge that has amplified during the pandemic. Teachers (and students) have found creative ways to engage each other and use the tech platform to communicate and learn together. Just last week I got to observe some 5th Graders share their Cooking Videos with each other in Drama. They were so creative and well done. And I’m certain that as they put these shows together they learned many valuable skills that will serve them well in the future. Collaboration, communication, writing skills, editing, and imaginative use of technology. I’m amazed how we continue to persevere and move forward with teaching and learning. I’m proud of all our Eagles.
On a personal note, I wish your family a safe Thanksgiving this year. I’m sure it will be different than usual. My typical trip to Michigan is not happening and we are scaling back on plans for Thursday the 26th. Like we’ve been doing since March, we’ll all adjust and make the best of it. But, however you end up spending it, I hope it's a special time with your family. I also hope you can take a moment to reflect on what you are thankful for, even in the midst of these challenging times. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving with your family.

Teacher Coverage During Remote +
We have limited substitute coverage in Remote + therefore we wanted to highlight scenarios that might make teachers unavailable and our solutions for that.
Meetings and Other Professional Obligations for Teachers during Remote +
Just as during a typical school year, teachers sometimes need to attend meetings (e.g., IEP, 504) and other professional obligations (e.g., training from an outside organization) for which they do not have control of the scheduling. As this school year progresses, if a professional obligation of this nature comes up, teachers will communicate with their students and families about any change in plans for the given time period. This could include asynchronous work for students, another Lyon or Pleasant Ridge staff member checking in with students and/or being available for “office hours” to answer questions and provide guidance.
Teacher Absences during Remote +
Illness or personal obligations out of school (e.g., funeral) may lead to full-day absences for teachers. When these absences occur, teachers will communicate with their students and families about any change in plans for that day. This could include asynchronous work for students, other Lyon or Pleasant Ridge staff members checking in with students and/or being available for “office hours” to answer questions and provide guidance. Student schedules with teachers not absent that day (e.g., Fine Arts, PE, small group English language instruction, etc.) would continue as usual.
Technology Support during Remote +
If a student or family needs assistance with an iPad or other technology related resource during the school day, please refer to the D34 Tech Hub for EC-2nd grade students or the Tech Support while Remote section of the D34 website.

Authorization to Administer Medication at School
If your child needs to take any medication during the school day -- either prescription or over-the-counter (including ibuprofen or other pain reliever) -- you must submit this form with a doctor's signature to the health office at school (Aquí está la forma en español.). There are no exceptions to this policy. Students should not have medication in their backpack or pocket; parents must provide the medication indicated on the form, in original packaging, to the school nurse.
All health forms are posted on the District 34 website on our frequently used forms page. If you have questions, please contact the Lyon health office at (847) 657-2894 or the Pleasant Ridge health office at (847) 657-2794.
