Sport - Week 4 Term 3
Tauranga Primary School
Jo's Sport Talk
Just as the winter sport season was getting into full swing, we once again have some uncertainty and regulations being reintroduced. I will communicate information I receive from local sporting associations. I have the following information for games this week:
Year 5&6 basketball will continue on Friday night, however, there will be specific health precautions in place:
- NO spectators allowed, therefore, parents must drop off and pick up. Only the coach and manager will enter the venue with the team.
- All players must hand sanitise on entry and departure.
- If you are feeling unwell, stay home.
- All players must bring their own water bottle as the water fountains will not be available for use.
At this stage, hockey will still take place on Saturday morning. The golden rule at the TGA Hockey Centre is 'Get in, Play and Get out'. There are further details on the TGA Hockey Centre safety procedures on their website www.tgahockey.co.nz
Harbourside Netball Centre will advise the community on Friday at midday whether Saturday morning games will take place or not.
TPS sports teams may continue to train, but students must hand sanitise before and after practice, names of those in attendance must be recorded for tracing purposes, and if you are unwell, stay home ( this includes the coach).
Please be aware that changes may happen at anytime, so please make regular checks on websites and FaceBook pages for updates.
Luckily, some of our budding sports stars have already played in the local 'World Cup' events this term. The TPS Hot Shots and TPS Swish competed in the Tauranga City Basketball World Cups, both hitting the courts in red and white as they represented Canada and Poland. Both tournaments were jam packed with lots of short, fast games of basketball. The TPS Swish only lost one game, but had two draws, which meant they finished 5th in their pool. The Hot Shots had a very tough pool with many A grade teams. The young players showed great determination and had an enjoyable day, finishing in 16th place overall.
TPS created a team to compete in the WBOP Primary School Rugby League 9 a-side Tournament. The neat thing about this tournament is that most of our TPS players have never played rugby league before, so they were able to experience a new sport. The whole team played amazingly well; they tallied up at least 20 tries and earned points for good behaviour on and off the field, finishing in 2nd place overall (one point behind the winners).
Thank you to all of the parents who helped transport, coach, manage and support these teams at these events.
At the start of this term, Brooke Valois competed in the BOP Primary Schools Squash Tournament in Rotorua at the beginning of the term. There were five girls in a very competitive graded division and Brooke won the final 3/2. She was super proud, and so are we!
Lots of TPS students braved the wet and cold weather this week and literally crawled through the mud as they participated in the Junior Tough Guy and Gal Challenge. There are plenty of photos below of our courageous kids in action.
Please feel free to share with me any individual or team successes that we can put in the sports newsletter. We love to hear about our budding sports stars.
