Wilson's Weekly
Sept. 3-7, 2018
Math
Tuesday, we will see how multiplication and division are related as we take a look at fact families. Wednesday, we will practice dividing or splitting items into a specified number of groups. Thursday, the students will divide or split up items so the same number of items are in each group. Friday, we'll revert back to multiplication as we solve for the missing factor.
Spelling & Writing
Our focus in Spelling this week will be words with short u & o-consonant-e, analogies, and inferences.
In Writing, the students will be introduced to a couple of ways that they can plan out their ideas. First, we'll discuss narrowing our idea down to a small or "One Time..." moment. Then, the students will jot down their ideas using bullets. Another way they can record their ideas is by mapping them out. The students will draw their maps and label the parts that could later be turned into a story. Later in the week, we'll go over the difference between a reporter's and a story teller's voice. This will help us make our stories come alive as we write. Friday, I will model how to use a web to plan out a beginning, middle, and end for my own narrative.
Reading
As we are learning about what makes someone a fluent reader, we will move into a phonics unit. The lessons will focus on strategies to help us sound out unfamiliar words. During the first lesson, we'll learn the difference between open & closed syllables. Second, we will see how the circle & bump method can help us sound out multisyllabic words. Finally, we will define various prefixes & suffixes and see how when they are added to the beginning or ending of a word, they change its meaning.
Science
We are finishing up our first lesson giving us a basis for balanced and unbalanced forces. Our second lesson introduces the students to the forces of flight - weight, lift, thrust, & drag. Then, the students will participate in activities where they'll be able to experience how each of these effect flight. The students will also be learning about 2 of Newton's Laws and how they relate to what they are learning.
