The Powell Paper
News for the Colin Powell 6th Grade Center FamiLE
Welcome to 6th Grade!
Updated 8/2/17
We are looking forward to getting to meet each of you very soon! Bookmark this newsletter, as it will be the hub for info throughout the year. Somethings will remain all year as reference points, but much of the info will change a few times a month to update you on upcoming events and important announcements. You'll notice some static sections for our various parts of the school, watch for updates from these departments to help you stay informed about the happening here at P6!
Once we get school kicked off the section below will house links to each of the content areas info boards, this is a great way to keep up with what is going on in class (and avoid the less than helpful "How was your day"..."fine" conversation).

Mrs. Miller's Musings
Welcome back to the 2017-2018 school year. We are looking forward to seeing all of our Sixth Grade students. We exist to help them achieve academically and socially as they grow and change. One of our strengths is that we support them as they transition from elementary curriculum and learning to the more rigorous standards of secondary. It is an incredible rewarding time for them even in the midst of many new challenges. As you have noticed, your child is growing and changing in many unique ways. They are becoming more independent in their thinking, social groups become very important to them, and they begin to change physically, too. We are unique because we support all they are facing this year and the next few years, as well. AND We love what we do! Sixth graders are some of the coolest kids there are.
Parents, we are also here for you. Moving from the preteen to the teen years is a unique time with incredible blessings. I have a 17 years old senior, a 15 year old, and an 11 year old. While the challenges are real, the rewards are, too. It is an age of transition and change and at the end of it all we want to give your kids a passion for learning and a joy for life.
We are looking forward to August 16 at 8:40am when our doors will officially open for a new year. "Meet the teacher" will be Wednesday, August 8, from 5:30p-6:30p. Please stop by, pick up your child's schedule (we will make a copy for you), and meet all of our teachers. We have great teachers who love kids and who believe in the mission of Little Elm ISD to ENGAGE, EQUIP, and EMPOWER, each of our students to reach their full potential.
The best year is ahead,
Elizabeth Miller
Attendance Reminders
Please review The Student Handbook pages 11-15 for more information. Below is just a few highlights that are helpful reminders.
In order to have an whole day or partial day absence excused you must submit a note within three days of returning to school.
- Doctor's Note: A doctor's note is excused and must be submitted to the front office. Students who miss five or more consecutive days must have a doctor's note. A doctor's note is required for any absence beginning with the 6th absence within any semester.
- Parent Note: Parent notes will be reviewed by the attendance committee for approval. A parent note after an absence must be submitted within 3 days after student returns to school. Beginning on the sixth absence in any semester, a note from a doctor is required to excuse the absence and any subsequent absences.
- A doctor's appointment where the student attends school for part of the day and returns with a doctor's note is not counted as an absence. Please avoid scheduling doctor's appointments during the official attendance period.
Excused Absences - A student who is absent (excused) shall be permitted to make up work and will receive one day/class meeting for each consecutive day/class meeting's absence to turn in make-up work or to obtain any info covered during the absence. In general, absences will be excused for the following reasons:
- doctor's appointments
- court appearance
- family emergency if the principal is contacted prior to the absence
- death in family
- religious holy days
In order for a student to receive credit in a class, they must be in attendance at least 90% of the time the class is offered. If they fall below 90% but are above 75%, they may participate in a plan approved by the district to regain credit.
Attendance Reporting Period: 3rd Period **Note that there may be some exceptions for this on assessment days and special events.**
Nurse's Corner
Hello Powell Parents!
Keeping a timely and clear communication between the Nurse and the parent is essential in effective care. To continue good communication I’d like to point out very important steps that needs to be done in order for it to happen.
Please keep ALL important phone numbers and emergency contacts in Focus up to date. Student are not allowed to use their cell phones while in school, however the Office and the Nurse’s phones are available at all times. Your child should be checked by the Nurse every time before calling home regarding sickness. Absences can be excused if the Nurse is sending them home due to illness.
Student should NEVER be carrying medication (including cough drops) with them in school. They are NOT allowed to drop off any medication to the Nurse. Only an adult can drop it off at school and a form needs to be signed. The only exception is an Asthma Inhaler - with appropriate documentation on file at the Nurse’s Office. Click here for more info.
If your child has had a fever at home or at school they need to be 24 hours fever free, without fever reducing medication, to be able to come back to school. That means that they cannot come back the next day - no exceptions.
If your child has a red/irritated eye, please bring a note from the doctor confirming it is not contagious. The Nurse cannot diagnose “pink eye”.
All necessary forms are available online at http://www.littleelmisd.net/Page/2502
Every year the school needs an UPDATED Asthma/Seizure/Allergy Action Plan. Please be proactive by filling out the appropriate forms at the beginning of the year. 911 WILL be called in all cases of emergency, however, lack of information and/or appropriate medication available may affect effective care.
Regarding Dress Code:
All students and parents should know the expectations on Dress Code from the Student Handbook. Students should treat it as a “job-like” attire and not leisure, as appropriate clothes are a must. When these expectations are not met, the student is given a temporary change of clothes (t-shirt, sweat pants, shorts) from the nurses office.
If your child forgets to return it by the end of the day, please make sure to send these back to Powell as other student might need it.
We are accepting donations on appropriate sizes of t-shirts, pants and shorts. No jackets please. (11-13 year old sizes, in good condition)
