Shout out to the B-C-S Student Services Department
The entire B-C-S Student Services Department deserves a big Rocket Congratulations for earning the highest Special Education rating in 2017 from the State of Ohio! Thank you for your dedicated efforts in providing excellent programming and working with each other to accurately report your work in EMIS. We know that accurate reporting is something that the department has focused on recently, and your efforts have paid off. Below is an excerpt from a letter received by the Superintendent recently from the Ohio Department of Education:
Every year, your district receives a rating on the performance of your special education program, known as your Special Education Rating. The Ohio Department of Education uses final data that your district submits through the Education Management Information System (EMIS). These data result in one of four ratings — Meets Requirements, Needs Assistance, Needs Intervention or Needs Substantial Intervention.
Benton Carroll Salem Local School District’s 2017 Special Education Rating is Meets Requirements. The primary basis of this rating is the final special education program data yourdistrict submitted through EMIS for the 2015-2016 school year.
*New* Results for Students with Disabilities
Measures of procedural compliance are historically the basis of your rating. Starting in 2018, your special education rating also will include measures of results for students with disabilities. If student results indicators were included this year, your district’s rating would be Meets Requirements.
Keeping Kids Safe Online
As computers and the internet become more important instructional tools for teachers it is increasingly important to keep kids safe online. Below are two resources you should investigate, which are recommended by the Ohio Department of Education
NetSmartz at http://www.netsmartz.org/Educators
CommonSense Media https://www.commonsense.org/education/.

Professional Development Update
Planning is underway for the October 16th Waiver Day. One of the activities that is being planned is working with all math teachers to assist them in the transition to the revised math standards. The revised standards must be fully implemented in the 2018-19 school year. Below is a link to more information on the revisions.
October 16 is a full seven and one half hour work day for teachers beginning at 8:00 AM. The next waiver day to be held on January 2, 2018 will start two hours late at 10:00 AM. This late start is to provide 2 hours of credit to teachers for completing Public School Works training. Teachers will also be allowed to claim 2 hours for Public School Works training on their Professional Development cards.
There are two instructional reviews being planned for this school year: K-12 science and K-12 social studies. The following dimensions are examined as part of these instructional reviews:
a) pacing of standards (Is the instruction paced appropriately?)
b) quality of assessments aligned to the standards
c) clarification of the vertical alignment of the standards
d) instructional materials/resources/tools (software, books, kits, etc.) to teach the standards
While science and social studies are up for a review this year, this doesn't mean that other content areas will be ignored. If for any reason you are facing challenges regarding any of the areas listed above (pacing, standards, materials, etc) and you need some help, please contact your building principal or the superintendent. We are here to support you and the work that you do.
