Congratulations FHS National Merit FINALISTS!
Congratulations James Ridgeway, Leah Smith and Luke Anderson for achieving this prestigious academic status. We are proud of you for starting this process as juniors and completing it as winners your senior year!
How prestigious is National Merit Finalist Status?
About 1.5 million students take the PSAT. Of these juniors, about 16,000 gain scores that qualify them as Semifinalists (that's a little more than 1%). This group is narrowed down to 15,000, who become Finalists.
How do students qualify?
Many students take the PSAT in the fall of their junior year. What a lot of students may not notice is the full name of the test is PSAT/NMSQT, or Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. Thus, the PSAT is not just good practice for the SATs. It’s also the first step in becoming a National Merit Finalist and hopefully, earning a scholarship from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC).
2016-17 Scheduling
FHS counselors will begin meeting with 9th, 10th and 11th grade students next week to discuss scheduling for next school year. Congratulation Josh Pannell
Joshua Pannell, a senior at Florence High School, is honored as a Teen Spotlight in Potential magazine for excelling in academics, leadership, business, philanthropy, arts, and citizenship and community service. Joshua is a member of the Boy Scouts, honor roll, and the National Junior Honor Society, and he placed in the Scholar Bowl and Best Robotics Competition. “He has always tried to do his best in everything whether it be school, extracurricular, church, sports, boy scouts and his lawn care business.”
Potential magazine is a multi-media resource for parents of college-bound teenagers. In each issue, high achieving students in the 7th-12th grade are featured and entered to win the $500 "Reach Your Potential" scholarship awarded in May. Teens are recommended by their school or community leaders for excelling in one or more of the following areas: academics, business, leadership, philanthropy, overcoming adversity, citizenship and community service, athletics, and the arts. Potential magazine's advisory board chooses teens to feature in each issue and select the scholarship winner in May from each of the finalists. Teens featured in Potential magazine are chosen from four regions in Alabama: Birmingham, Huntsville, Mobile, and Montgomery.

FLORENCE GETS A 9-0 WIN AT FIRST HOME MATCH
Florence opened up at home with two 9-0 matches. The bar has been set high as the women defeat Lauderdale County 9-0 and the men defeat James Clemens 9-0. The women started the day with doubles giving up 1 game and winning 30. Lilly Holmes and Ruth Roberts won 10-0 at court 1. Sydney Davis and Edy Smith took a clean sweep at court two winning 10-0. Carolyn Smith and Sydney Leavitt capped the action on court three doubles with a win of 10-1. The Falcons went into singles with confidence and came through the storm of singles with sixty games won and two games lost. Holmes won 10-2 at court one. Roberts took court two 10-0. Davis continued the clean sweep on court three 10-0. Leavitt, Edy Smith and Emma Rhodes took clean sweep matches 10-0 on the last three courts. The women now have a 2-0 record and a 1-0 area record.
The men were playing a match on the other six courts with The James Clemens Jets. The match was a 9-0 clean sweep for the Falcons. Zack Hester and Nick Hester took court one 10-1. Luke Anderson paired with Nikhil Boorgu to win court two 10-3. Noah Davis and Jack Rusevlyan took court three with a clean win 10-0. The men went into singles needing only two courts to win the match. Each one vowed to be the court that made a difference. All six singles courts made the difference. Z. Hester on court one won 10-2. Anderson reported a score of 10-6 on court two. Boorgu came out on top 10-6 on court three. N.Hester struggled at first on court four but, found the groove and won 10-5. Davis gave the Falcons the eighth win of the evening on court five with a 10-7. Rusevlyan put the Jets back in the hanger by bringing a 10-2 win to the table from court six. The mens team now has an overall record of 2-0 and an area record 1-0. Both teams will be back in action Monday, February 29th against Lauderdale County.
