Weekly Sight Words or Vocab
Sight Words:
We will be testing the students in class on the Dolch Sight words for first grade. If the students know all of the words on the first list, they will move onto the next list. I believe there are 9 lists. If your student does not know some of the words once they get to say, List 3, then it will be the responsibility of the student to practice that list of sight words at home so he/she can be tested on the list on Fridays. We'd love to see how many of these sight words your student knows, and encourage them to really practice the ones they don't know yet.
Sight word packets will be sent home Monday and should stay in your student's red folder as you practice each night. Thank you in advance for your support in this endeavor!
Vocabulary:
If your student has passed all 9 lists, I am sending home vocabulary for the students to study as a way to keep challenging them. There will be 4 words per week. Each word has a definition as well as questions to answer to further understand the vocabulary word. I will attach a paper to the back for parents of questions to ask verbally each night to help your student learn these vocab words. I will quiz them on the words on Friday to see what they've learned! This is not for a grade, but a way to continue to push the students to learn more!

Homework and Assessments
Research shows that students who read for 20 minutes a day or more are exposed to about 1.8 million words each year! This exposure helps students score better on tests, learn new vocabulary, build empathy, and improve mental health. The students are reading in Read to Teacher and Read to Self centers for 16-20 minutes per day and are reading directions and questions all throughout the day, but the homework reading is so important too! We had a lot of students this past week who did not read their short book for homework. Please help your student build good study habits by having them read their homework each night!
Fluency- Your student will bring home a fluency page to be read each night. This week, there will be one corresponding question a night on the back of the sheet. Please send this back in on Fridays! I will listen to your student read it a final time and he/she will receive a smelly sticker for completion!
