HIV/AIDS
Laila Kamel
How did it begin and how did it spread?
In the 1980's many homosexual men were beginning to contract this new disease. Studies lead to the believed "patient zero" at the time, who was a homesexual man who transmitted HIV sexually to thousands of other men across the United States. However when they began to trace where he got it from, they found many suspicious cases much earlier than his time, and eventually were able to track it down to a chimp in the jungles of Southern Africa. People would hunt and kill these chimps and one person contracted this disease from his prey.
Impact
30 million people worldwide have died from this disease
Modern Day Treatment
Using a disabled form of the virus to reprogram the immune system so that it kills cancer cells, almost like a viral/cancer vaccine. Used on young girl with Leukemia, and it succeeded.
