Dear Parents,
Reading together remains one of the most important things we can do with our children. Today, recommendations include reading information or nonfiction books with much more regularity. Nonfiction books present many opportunities to learn new concepts and vocabulary, as well as broaden a child's view of the world. Nonfiction books are written differently than picture books in that there are often more pictures, graphics, charts and photographs included within the pages. You can ease the transition into more nonfiction reading by encouraging your child to preview a book before reading and to be an active reader who asks lots of questions.
Literacy remains one of our goals here at Malabar. Encourage your child to read everyday non-fiction and fiction books. Let's make reading a good habit for all of our students. This month we are completing our DIBELS assessments. Please reach out to your child's teacher to see if your child is meeting grade level expectations. I know that by reading together at school and at home, students will have the literacy they need to be successful in school.
Sincerely,
Margarita Gutierrez, Principal
Estimados Padres,
Sinceramente,
Margarita Gutiérrez, Directora
COVID Updates/Informes sobre el COVID
The safety of staff and students is very important for everyone at Malabar. We will continue testing weekly to ensure that all students that are on campus are negative. All staff, students, and visitors to Malabar will be expected to wear their masks inside and outside. Currently, we are spacing our students in the lunch pavilion to ensure that they have the space needed to eat their lunch safely. All teachers and staff will continue to provide students with various opportunities throughout the day to wash and disinfect their hands. I know that by working together, we can ensure that our students are healthy and can continue learning at Malabar. If you have any questions, please see Ms. Gutierrez, Principal.

DIBELS-Middle of Year Assessment
Teachers are currently administering DIBELS during the month of February. DIBELS screens students to see if they are meeting literacy expectations at each grade level. Malabar staff and teachers use this information to monitor student progress and design instruction and interventions to help support our students’ literacy skills. For grades K-2, we are building foundational skills that will help our students be great readers. In grades 3-5, DIBELS will monitor fluency levels and comprehension to ensure that they are on their way of meeting grade level standards. DIBELS is one measure used to support instruction and interventions. Please ask your child’s teachers to share your child’s score. If you child scored at the intensive level, we need to provide opportunities for your child to read and practice skills learned during the instructional day. All students need to read every day to help build fluency and comprehension levels.
Malabar Bears ROAR
Respect, Open-minded,
Always Safe, Responsible
Student behaviors fall into the four categories which define Malabar’s philosophy: Respect, Open Minded, Always Safe and Responsibility. Adherence to these expectations contributes to a positive and effective school community in which children are able to succeed and grow. Parents of Malabar Street Elementary School must be familiar with the school’s expectation for student behavior and related consequences. Parents are responsible for ensuring that their children arrive at school each morning in a timely fashion, ready to learn. The school expects parents’ support in reinforcing behavioral expectations at home and communicating with classroom teachers. If you have any questions, please contact your child’s teacher.
Seguridad, Respeto y Responsabilidad
As part of our Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS), our SSPT meets on a weekly basis to identify and provide supports for students who are struggling academically, linguistically, and/or behaviorally in the general education setting. The purpose of SSPT is to monitor student achievement. SSPT involves a problem-solving process, data driven decision making, implementation of targeted intervention and ongoing progress monitoring. Teachers and parents can refer their student to SSPT if they have concerns. SSPT will develop goals and strategies to be implemented in the classroom and support systems to be implemented at home to help achieve grade level standards and behavior expectations. For more information, please contact Ms. Martinez, Intervention Coordinator at (323) 261-1103.
