Ferdinand Magellan - Mini Biography


Ferdinand Magellan was born in Sabrosa, Portugal in 1480. Ferdinand was brave, loyal, courageous, fearless, self sufficient, and intelligent. Ferdinand sailed for Spain in 1519 to try to discover a western sea route to the Spice Islands. Ferdinand Magellan died on April 27, 1521.


Magellan sailed along the coast of Europe down to around Africa then cut across the Atlantic. He then sailed around the tip of South America. When he reached the Pacific Ocean he named it Pacific meaning peaceful. He went up and across until he reached the Spice Islands. Two ships went to Africa and the others went to Spain. Magellan's feat was him naming the Pacific Ocean. He explored form 1519 to 1521. The purpose of his exploration was to find a western sea route to the Spice Islands. He proved that the globe could be circled by sea and that the world was much larger than had previously been imagined.

Ferdinand Magellan and his crew discovered the Phillipines fight after they reached the equator on their voyage. Not long after this Ferdinand Magellan was killed by natives on the island of Mactan
